Alexis's POV
Lizzie woke me up early so that we could get ready and go to Tim's house. I got dressed in my black jumpsuit and flats while Lizzie put on a dress with elbow-length sleeves. It was a quiet morning, I think we both had a lot on our minds.
I was going to meet some of my biological family members for the first time today. My grandfather is dead, like dead-dead. I guess all those worries I had about meeting him didn't matter anymore. All those thoughts about having a complete happy family, where there's more than just me, well me and Lizzie.
Even if I never really felt like I needed a grandparent, now I guess I won't ever know what that is like. I've always wondered what that type of love would feel like when I was little and more so now after going to a real school. Kids will talk about how they visited their grandparents or had a big family dinner but I don't think I will ever truly experience that.
It's just Lizzie and me and that's okay. I mean some days I still feel a little lonely but I don't know if that's because I'm actually lonely or just disconnected. Some days I'm just stuck in my head and on others, I feel like I'm just going through the motions.
"Hey," Lizzie gently placed her hand on mine, "we're here. Are you ready to go in?"
"Yeah," I nodded, moving to open the car door.
Lizzie led me to the front of the house and knocked on the door. It swung open not even a few seconds later. "Elizabeth right?" an old white man greeted us.
"Yeah, Tim?"
"Yes, and that must make you, Alexis," Tim greeted me. I nodded shyly and leaned into Lizzie's side, not particularly enjoying the stranger danger aspect of this encounter, "well come in, come in." He opened the door wider for us. Lizzie grabbed a hold of my hand and squeezed gently as she pulled me in the door.
"They're here," Tim announced to whoever was awaiting us in the kitchen.
"Alexis?" some lady answered as we walked into the kitchen and all eyes were on me, well us.
"Hi," Lizzie spoke up for the both of us.
"Guys this is Elizabeth and Alexis, they've grown a lot since we last saw them," Tim announced to the small group. So maybe Lizzie has met some of these people already?
"Oh my goodness, she looks just like Kayli did at her age, minus the hair!" one of the ladies shouted loudly making me flinch instinctively.
"Angelica, don't scare the poor girl," another man scolded her.
"I'm sorry, I don't mean this to sound rude but could you kindly remind me who each of you is?" Lizzie asked wrapping a protective arm around me.
"Oh yes, I'm sorry. I'm Angelica, John's cousin. This is my husband Ben and I'm sorry but the kids couldn't make it," Angelica giddily introduced herself.
"I'm Harry, Harrison's kid, sorry he couldn't make it. But this is my wife Jane, and our daughter Georgia," the other man pointed out. A small blonde child came bouncing into the room with a thump making the whole room chuckle at her clumsiness.
"Well hello, Miss Georgia," Lizzie greeted the small child who looked up at us curiously.
"Hellwo!" she happily answered.
"Georgia, are you hungry now?" Jane asked as she got up to pick up her child.
I tuned out the rest of the noise as I watched curiously. The whole family began to move about the kitchen as if in one fluid motion. They passed out plates and laid out the food dishes in a cohesive order. It was like no words were needed but they were being spoken.
