Lizzie's POV
Alexis woke about sixty seconds later but it was the longest sixty seconds of my life. She woke groggily and out of it.
"Mama?" her voice was hoarse as she searched for me.
"I'm here, you're okay," I informed her quickly before she could realize what was happening.
"I-I fell?" She directed towards me as the medic began to make his way over. Scarlett was by the door keeping guard.
"You did, you fainted because of the heat," I explained slowly before her eyes fearfully scanned the room, taking note of what she would describe as a vulnerable position.
"What?" She searched my face with her scared eyes.
"You have what they call heat exhaustion so we had to cool you down," I explained studying her carefully.
"I don't want to be naked," she fiddled her fingers as she continued to take in her surroundings. There was a good-sized cooling blanket across her bottom half and athletic makeshift icepacks all over.
"How about some shorts while your body cools?" I suggested gently as the medic stands nearby.
"No," Alexis shook her head quickly.
"We had to cut you out of your jeans, so we can't put those back on," I explained watching her carefully. I still had yet to move from my spot at the end of the bed in the fear that I might harm her more.
"Oh," Alexis breathed out in deep thought but proceeded not to answer my question.
"Hey, Alexis, I'm a doctor, do you think I could give you a quick exam? I just want to make sure your head is okay," the man spoke politely, looking directly at Alexis.
"Can Lizzie stay?" Alexis spoke up.
"Of course, she can, do you want her to get you some shorts first?" The medic asked kindly, trying to keep her comfortable. Alexis shook her head no keeping her eyes trained on the medic.
"I can grab some extra clothes, is your trailer unlocked?" Scarlett decided.
"I think so? Alexis was the last one in there," I informed her.
"I didn't lock it," Alexis explained quietly. She normally only locks it when she's actually in there, which is an ironic problem, but one for another day.
"Ok, I'll be back soon, I'll try to find you some good clothes, Lex," Scarlett smiled her signature smile at us before leaving.
"Alexis, can you tell me what day of the week it is?" The medic began.
"Friday," Alexis answered confidently while still giving him an almost side-eye look.
"Yes, okay now I'm gonna check your pupils. So I'm gonna shine a light in your eyes, is that okay?" The medic checked as he pulled out his penlight.
"I guess," Alexis stuttered.
"How about we get your mom to come and sit with you? Would that make it easier?" He suggested. Alexis looked at me desperately so I moved quickly, tossing my green jacket to the side.
She was still laying down with the ice packs and cooling towels or blankets keeping her cool, so I elected to sit by her side and take her hand in mine. She squeezed my hand gently and turned a little to face me as the exam continued. The medic was quick and thorough as he explain every step carefully and made sure he had Alexis's consent before doing so. The last thing he did was check her temperature. It had gone down a little bit but not back to normal. He informed us next of what to expect in the following days and how I can help her recover.
