Chapter 8: Kill

It seemed like I had more enemies than friends at school, but now I had a boyfriend.

Juliet was always advancing in her attack on me. I never let anyone see how bad her stabs jabbed me. Keene and I were walking in the hallway; holding hands when she hit me where it hurt.

“So you don’t like superheroes?” I asked him.

“I never said that. I’m just saying that I like some better than others.” He says with a chuckle.

Without warning, Juliet is in front of me. I guessed she’d been watching us the whole time.

“Hey, Kamie, how are you?” She asks mockingly. I lower my head.

“Not so good, huh? Maybe it’s those extra pounds you’ve put on.”

She says, pointing a bony finger at my stomach. I fold my arms across my body.

I wasn’t sure why she always patronized me, but I was always the easy kill.

“Hmm. How are we gonna fix this problem? I know, why don’t you follow in the steps of your anorexic bestie? No, that wouldn’t work, you’re to chubby now. I’ve got an idea. Do what your dad did. Go out and get yourself shot, I beg of you please. And another thing about your idiotic dad-”

“That’s enough, Juliet.” Keene booms.

She purses her lips into a straight line.

“Fine. I was done anyway. Guess I’ll see you at the gym…” she begins walking away “or, maybe not.” She says over her shoulder.

By the time she had finished, I had a maelstrom of tears in my eyes.

I try to start walking again, but Keene steps in front of me.

“Don’t listen to her.” He says.

My voice was breaking now.”Yeah… yeah, I know it’s just-”

“Hey, listen to me. You’re so… beautiful. She’s… just wrong. I’m sorry she talked about you’re dad like that. I just think that you deserve so much more than what you get.

I know the tears are coming now.

“Come here.” He says, wrapping his arms around me. I return the gesture. His intoxicating cologne swirled the air around me.

 I pull away from his grip and pull him close and kiss him passionately.
