Chapter 31: Without You
Kamie
I looked at the beach house with sadness. Three weeks in Hawaii wasn’t long enough. I didn’t want to go, this was exactly what I wanted, to be alone with Keene 24 hours a day. I figured after all I’d talked, dreamt, and thought about that I’d feel stronger. But, I allowed my heart- which was still mangled and mutilated from all its troublesome times- to show me my life. But what the hell, I’m gonna let it happen. We went in reverse as I said goodbye to the island.

When reached the airport safely and were in the air when Keene said the first thing he’d said all day, he was probably just as depressed to leave.
“Life without you is a broken pencil… pointless.” He stared out the window.
I turned his face to meet mine. “That was so tacky.” But, kissed him quickly anyway.
He chuckled, “I was working on it all day.”
After getting out of the airport and getting back to Kentucky, we drove closer towards the house along a very firmilar interstate.
“Did you have a good time?” Keene asked as we took an exit off the road.
“Yeah, ‘cuz I was with you.” I smiled. We approached the road that lead into the city, but instead of turning right, he turned left- heading towards the country- towards Ashland.
I glanced at him, but his stare was fixed forwards at the road ahead of us.
“Where are we?” I asked. It felt like I’d been here many times before, however I couldn’t place any of the landmarks.
He turned his head slowly and then forward again.
He sighed, “You’re gonna be mad.” He looked at me again, his eyes soft. “Please don’t be mad.”
“Why would I-” I couldn’t believe what was in front of me.
My face hardened. My house-and my mother- were in front of us.
“Hell no.” I protested as we pulled into the driveway. He pulled the keys out of the ignition.
“This wasn’t my idea!” He defends.
“I am not going in there!” I snapped.
He closed his eyes and sighed, “Please!”
“No.”
“I don’t see what the big deal is; she’s just your mom.”
I glared at him, “Fine, then you talk to your dad.”
He glared right back, but I could tell my words stung worse than any bleeding gash, his jaw flexed.
“Exactly.” I could taste the acid in my voice.
He groaned, blowing off my burn.
“Kamie, just talk to her!” He begged.
“Keene, you don’t know what hell I’ve been through. Okay? You can’t just push me like this! If I’m pushed any further off the edge, that’ll be it. And it’s all mostly because of that woman.” I bit my tongue to keep the angry tears away. I stared forward and I felt Keene’s eyes on me. I swiftly turned to face him.
His eyes were soft, and his eyebrows creased his forehead. I could tell he was regretting this. He saw the pain I felt towards her and the anger.
“I’m sorry, okay? But she wants to speak to you.”
