Chapter 12: I Didn’t Mean It

Tony and Jill were cuddled together in a lawn chair.

Maria was sitting next to Jay, holding hands with him

Clara sat there alone, texting away on her cell.

And Juliet sat in the corner, wallowing. I decided to leave her alone; she was most likely crying about not getting to watch her favorite TV show or something. To my surprise she was still wearing her bikini.

“Hey, there she is!” Tony exlaimed, “Are you ok?”

“I’m fine.” I reply, taking a seat next to Jill and him.

“That’s good… now we can tease you for being afraid to jump.” Jill laughs.

“Jillian! It’s a cliff! I’m sorry I wasn’t volunteering to jump off of it!” I smile.

“Well, I’m just glad you’re ok, hermana.” She says, reaching over and hugging me.

“For once I agree with your shrill, commanding voice.” Tony said.

Jill scowled him. “Oh my gosh, did that come out loud?”

Jill nods angrily. “I meant to say I love you.”

“I bet you did.” Jill says.

We all laugh at them; they were cute, yet annoying.

Juliet, who hadn’t laughed said something completely unexpected.

“Kamie, I’m sorry. I know you drowned yourself because of me,”

It felt weird to hear the words “you drowned yourself”.

“And I just feel really bad. I’m so sorry.” She wipes a tear away from her cheek.

My jaw dropped. I couldn’t believe she thought this was her fault.

I was the one who chose to jump, not her. There was an unimaginable sense of guilt washed over her perfect face.

“Juliet, you do realize that I was the one who decided to jump off that rock, right? I was the one who stopped swimming; who… quit. You didn’t, I did.” I say to her.

“But, Kamie, I said some terrible things to you. How can you be so nice to me? How’d you stand me?”

“I’ve had lots of practice.” I joke.

She smiles slightly, but cries even harder.

I get up from my seat and walk over to her’s. I give her a hug, she returns it.

“I didn’t mean it- any of it.” She says.

“I know.”
