Chapter 23- Faithfully

Keene

I had known Kamie for almost a year now, and that was just the right amount for what I had planned.

Kamie

The sun was the first thing to wake me up.

May 11th.

Happy birthday, me. Happy death anniversary, dad.

Today was bittersweet.

I turned 18, but at the same time… dad died 3 years ago today.

I reach over for Keene’s warmth, but he’s gone.

Great. When I need him most he’s gone.

I open my eyes to see that his empty spot on the bed was actually replaced by a note.

“Come to the kitchen.” It said, in Keene’s handwriting.

My feet hit the floor, and below them I see a trail of rose petals, allowing me to follow them into the kitchen.

They led to the stove where a plate sat. On top of it was a cake, a birthday cake. It had a heart on it, aligned were 18 candles blazing fieriously, making a bigger heart around that one.

It was chocolate; the heart was drawn in pink icing.

I very seriously doubt that Keene made it by himself, but I was greatful for it.

I smiled to myself, and blew out the candles.

Next to the cake was another note.

“I’ll never forget your face. You know the place. Where’d we kiss? I’ll see you there, miss.” It said, again in Keene’s hand writing.

I excidetly ran to the bedroom and changed out of my pajamas, a spring in my step, ready to get in my car and drive to the movies.

I walked outside to see that Jillian is parked on the road waiting for me. I hurry to her, and once I slide into the passenger’s seat I realize that Juliet, Maria, and Clara are in the back.

“Happy Birthday!” They all shout at the same time.

“Thanks.” I beam, fastening my seatbelt.

“Keene called us to help with your birthday surprise.” Jill says.

“What birthday surprise?” I question.

“Nice try.” Jill giggles. She stepped on the gas and we went forward.

“So what did Keene do for you today?” Juliet asks, playing with Clara’s hair.

“He… bought me a cake.”

“Aww.” All four girls say at the same time.

I had to laugh at his; they never agreed… about anything, ever.

“You know, nothing says ‘Happy birthday’ like a cake.” Maria says, thumbing her I-Phone.

“Yeah, here’s a cake, eat it and get fat! Happy birthday!” I say sarcastically.

They laughed with me.

“You guys really do love each other.” Maria chortles.

“You have no idea,” I say, spinning around in my seat to face her.

“Everytime I see him, my heart beats out of my chest. It’s weird, I feel like no matter what I do for him, I’m never going to love him as much as he loves me, even though I do love him the same amount.”
