Chapter 24: Wreck of the Day
Keene
Graduation Day: the day when we escape this awful place. I look to Kamie, and whisper “We survived.”
Sitting on the football field in steel chairs was weird. It was a pretty elabrate set up though.
The stage was set up in the middle of the football field, in front of it was a wave of chairs, and behind that was the bleachers.
The principal attempted to speak, but her voice was drowned out by animal noises coming from the students in front of her. We all hated her.
I sat down after getting my diploma. Kamie layed a hard kiss on my lips, and I fell out of my chair.
“You’re getting better at that kissing thing.” I tell her.
She winks at me.
“Kamille Roe.” The principal utters.
I stood up and cheered for her, along with her friends and Teddy. He didn’t go to our school; he was here for moral support. I’m glad she had him. Her own mother didn’t bother to show up, and then again, neither did my father. Quinna was there though.
She sat back down next to me.
“Yay. We’re free.” I whisper to her, nuzzling my nose into her neck.
She kisses my forehead.
“Pay attention, ornery.” She tells me.
I watched her play with her engagment ring. I was glad she liked it; it did cost over 4,000 dollars after all.

As we threw our graduation caps in the air, Juliet walked over to Kamie and me.
“Hey guys, we’re going to Olive Garden, do you want to join us?” She asks, pointing her thumb towards Jay and Maria.
“Sure.” I say, Kamie was to busy to notice her, she was conversing with Teddy and Jillian.
“Great.” She says, skipping away.
In my truck, Kamie and I sat in high school parking lot, waiting for the traffic to become less congested so we could join everyone at Olive Garden.
One thing was on my mind that I couldn’t shake.
“Kamie?” I ask, trying to pull her attention away from the cars.
She turns to face me.
“Yeah?”
I looked at her for a second, wondering if I should bring it up or not. I thought for a while.
We were going to be married soon, I needed to know this.
“When I talked to Teddy… he said something about you trying to….” I let my voice trail off, I couldn’t finish the sentence, it was to heart wrenchingly painful.
She looks at me for a second. “Kill myself?” She finishes.
I nod reluctantly.
Kamie
I look him in the eyes, and turn my whole body toward him.
“My dad was the only reason that I stuck around in this world, and when he was gone… I had… nothing.”
Like many of the other events in my life, I recollected this one darkly.
