Chapter 29: Smother Me

“Kam, hey. Shh. It’s okay.” A voice soothed.

I kept thrashing, wishing I could escape. My cheeks were soaked with tears.

“Kamie, wake up.” The voice soothed again.

Suddenly, I was staring at the TV again. Keene was crouched down beside me on the floor.

I stared at him, catching my breath as my heart crashed in my chest.

“You were having a nightmare.” He informed me, wrapping his arms around me.

I took his face in my hands. “You’re okay!” I shouted, relieved.

He looked perplexed. “Are you okay?”

“I had a bad dream.” I say, hugging him, calming myself down.

“It’s okay. It wasn’t real. You’re fine.”

I kept my arms around him, but pulled away. He caressed my cheek with his thumb, wiping away my tears. “Why are you crying?” He asks sweetly.

“It was the worst dream ever.” I correct.

He coddled my face in his palm. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No.” I answered quickly; I didn’t even want to think about it.

“Okay. Well, I got sushi!” He cheered. “Good!” I smiled.

“So where’d you buy this? It was good.” I ask, pointing towards the empty tin sushi container.

“I went to a gas station near town.” He replied, throwing away the containers that we’d just eaten all of the sushi out of.

He sat back down across from me at the table.

He sighed, “I think we should have a talk.”

My eyebrows raised in fear, “Okay.” I said hesitantly.

Keene

“I mean this in the nicest way possible, okay?” I ask.

She nods slowly.

“You… have so many problems, babe. I know you don’t like talking about it, but-”

“I’m perfectly happy right now.” She interrupted me before I could finish.

“Okay, but your mom is-”

“If she really cared about me, she wouldn’t slap me on the face.”

“Can we please just talk about this?”

She nodded slowly while rolling her eyes, giving up.

I gestured for her to speak first.

Kamie

A sharp pain stuck in my side. “Um, I’m feeling… terrible.”

“Good, we’re getting somewhere.”

“No, I mean I seriously feel-” I couldn’t sit here anymore, I ran into the bathroom.

I leaned over the toilet, getting violently sick.

Keene knocked on the door. “Are you alright?” He asked, concerned.

“Don’t come in.”

My stomach stung with unbearable nausea.

“You’re sick. Come on. I’ll take care of you.” He says.

“No! Just go away! I’ll be fine.” I clutched by stomach, trying to keep from vomiting again.

I heard him sigh, “Kamie.”

“No.” I said scornfully.

I could tell my stuborness was annoying him. He opened the door.

He didn’t say anything, he just bent down  behind me and held my hair back as I retched again.

I breathed heavily, “Buying sushi from a gas station wasn’t a good idea.”

“Obviously.” He says, rubbing my back.

I stood up slowly, being careful not to shake myself up too much. I grabbed some mouthwash out of the cabinet and cleaned my mouth.

“It’s hot in here.” Keene murmured. I was freezing as the ocean brought the tempurature down three degrees, leaving it at fifty one degrees.

“No it’s not. I’m cold.” I shiver. He wrapped his arms around my hips and rested his head on my shoulder while I looked at myself in the mirror. My face was pale and flushed.

I hugged Keene as I turned around. His body was burning hot, like hugging a heating pad.

“My god, you’re hot!” I exclaimed.

“Well, thanks.” He smiled smugly.

“No, I mean you’re burning up!” I stated.

I put my freezing hand over his firey forehead.

“You’re turning into a werewolf aren’t you?” I tease.

He chuckled. I pressed my lips to his forehead, but I had stand on my tip toes to reach him, and again he was flaming.

I look at him.

“Food poisoning.” We say at the same.

We spent the whole night on the bathroom floor, neither one of us felt well enough to walk.

Oh well.
