Kamie
Pancakes aren’t a good comfort food. Neither are deep fried pickles, mashed potatoes, cookies, or… I could go on forever. The word comfort shouldn’t ever be mixed with food. Ever. In my world, comfort doesn’t exsist.

Chapter 1: You Found Me
“Kamie, why do you have to move?” Jillian’s words resonated in my head for a month. Our summer was amazing; well, as amazing as it could be for a girl who’d just lost her dad. Today was the day I was ramping up for… going to my new school. This year will be different. It will, I’m making sure of that.

A ringing in my ear woke me up. Alarm clocks: nature’s way of waking you up… with a heart attack. “Kam…” mom yells. “I heard it!” I shout back. My room, which I was still getting used to, was blurred. I reach to find my glasses on the night stand to my left. I felt like Lisa Loeb in the thick Urkel glasses I was forced to wear when I was fifteen. I remember when dad tried to convince me to wear them.
“Daddy, all the kids are going to make fun of me. I look like a nerd.” I said.
“A very beautiful nerd.” He added.
I frown at him. “Kamille Ainsley Roe. I think you look absolutley breath taking.”
“All the boys will see me and never ask me out. They’ll text each other about it. I’ll be so embarrased if Tyler finds out.”
Tyler was my boyfriend, and not a good one.
“If Tyler cares what you look like, then he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy you should be going out with.”
He sat down on the edge of my bed. He moved a hair from my face. “One day… you’ll find a guy who will show you just how pretty you are. And who will love you for the way you smile, not how thin or overly made up you are.” He smiled his gentle smile.
“Promise?” I asked. He nodded. He wraps his arms around me and gives me a squeeze. “I love you, princess.”
“I love you more.” I smiled.
“Come on babe, shake a leg! First day of school!” Mom says, now at my doorway.
I quickly jump up as mom walks out the door. I run over to my vanity mom had put in just for me. I didn’t want it. It replaced the desk dad had given me. I reach for the mascara and paint my eyelashes. And put on foundation, which was the only makeup I ever wore.
Normal girls say that they love picking out what to wear in the morning, but I’d rather just go in sweat pants. I decide a Spiderman t-shirt and jeans were better than nothing, and they fitted the nerd look perfectly.
I grab my backpack off the chair that was scooted up to the vanity and run down the stairs. The smell of French toast fills my nose. “Are you excited?” Mom asks at the stove. “No. I want to vomit.” I say.
“Aww, honey. It’s ok. It’s everyone’s first day of school too.”
“Not at a new school! I’ll be lost! I won’t know which teachers are tough or angry! And all those kids have a history with each other. Everyone’s all friends with each other, I’ll be all alone!”
The word friends made me think to Jillian. She was my best friend in the whole world, but she was still in Ashland, and I was miles away in Lexington. I know that there isn’t that much milage between the two places, but we can’t see each other. Her dad is an eco nut and won’t travel more than fifty-five miles. I remember the last time I saw her before I moved. We went to a movie.
