Chapter 36: (You’re) Having My Baby
Mom and I stared at each other for a few minutes.
“Pregnant? You can’t be pregnant! You haven’t even had sex.”
“Mom,” I rolled my eyes, “I’ve had sex three times now.”
She sat there, blankly. “Ugh, you’re no help.” I said jogging into the kitchen and grabbing my phone. I called Jillian, praying her voice would comfort me.
Everything was blurred as I dialed the numbers.
"Hello?"
"Oh, Jill! Thank god."
"Kam? What is it? You're scaring me."
"I think there’s something wrong and its ... really scary, you have to promise you won't tell Keene."
"Sure, sure. Of course."
I took a deep breath, "I think I’m... pregnant."
"What?!" A voice that wasn't Jill's said.
I turned to see Keene standing in the doorway, his expression drenched in shock.
"I'll call you back." I said to Jill, interrupting her sentence about being an aunt and slid the phone into my back pocket.
Slowly I walked forwards to him, reaching out.
"Don't freak out." I say, grabbing his wrists.
“I don’t know for sure, okay?”
I grabbed his hands.
“I don’t know, okay? Relax.”
He nods slowly; we both take a deep breath at the same time.
“Do…we…are you…have to go….”He stumbled.
“We have to go to the doctor to know for sure. Okay? You can come, if you want. But you don’t have to.” I say.
“Do you want me to come?” he says, finally getting his words out.
“Do you want to come?” I ask.
“Yeah, I want to be there with you. I said I was gonna hold your hand every step of the way, this is just another step.” He says.
I nod.

Waiting rooms aren’t made for patient people.
I was jittery the whole time, bouncing my knees up and down.
Keene held both my hands in his.
I looked at him, “Will you still be in love with me after this?”
He raised his eyebrows.
“Seriously?” He asks, not believing the words I said.
“Yeah.”
He moved in closer, so close that I bet he could hear my heart.
“Truly. Madly. Deeply.” He said simply. “I am truly, madly, deeply in love with you.”
“Kamie!” A voice shouted. I turned to see a nurse, “You wanna come on back now?”
I stood up and took a deep breath, grabbing Keene’s hand.
He looked at me and we walked into the exam room.
We had to actually go home and wait to find out if we were having a baby.
Teddy, Mom, Jill, Keene, and I now occupied the living room. We just sat there, staring at the TV, but not really watching it.
I wasn’t sure if I actually wanted to be pregnant. Its enough to take care of yourself, but someone else? I don’t know.
On the plus side, if I was pregnant… that meant I wasn’t dying.
I worried about this a lot.
How could I have a child that I didn’t love or care about? I couldn’t live knowing that.
I would much rather die than have someone in my life that loved me more than I loved them.
I had no fears about Keene though. I knew he’d be an excellent father. He’d certainly matured a lot in the past year, more than me maybe.
I needed my dad. I wanted a hug from him; I needed him.
“Mom.” I said.
“Honey?”
I scooted in closer to her, “I miss dad.”
I fell onto her shoulder, wrapping my arms around her.
She sighed, “I know, baby. Me too.”
If I‘d known that hugs were all it took to fix broken a relationship, I would’ve wrapped my arms around her in the blink of an eye.
Trust is like a mirror, you fix it if its broken but, you can still see the cracks in that damn reflection.
We all slept in the living room, waiting for the phone to ring. I noise woke me up early in the morning; it was still dark outside.
I truged groggily into the kitchen.
Teddy and Jill were yelling at each other.
“I can’t believe you, Teddy!”
“Why? What the hell did I do?!”
“If you don’t know then I’m not telling you!”
“Jillian, please!”
“Teddy I- Oh hi Kamie!”
I stared at them, “Regis, Kelly, are you done?”
They nodded.
“Why are you guys screaming in the middle of my kitchen?” Keene said, coming in.
Mom stepped in behind them, “Guys, just calm down.”
And like a tornado ripping through a pasture, they all started screaming. Walls of sound blocking me from thinking.
Under all the screaming, I could hear the telephone ringing.
Keene
“You guys! Guys! Shut up!” Kamie said, quieting everyone. She held her hands into the air.
She pulled the telephone up to her ear.
“Hello… this is she…. Yes…. Oh, really? That’s…. Yeah, thanks so much….”
You could’ve heard a pin drop in that room. Everyone held their breath.
She stared forward.
She whispered, “I’m pregnant… for sure.”
I smiled broadly and picked her up effortlessly, “This is so great!”
I kissed her cheek.
“Yeah… great.” She said quietly.
