Chapter 43: Time Is Running Out
Keene and I weren’t really worried until we’d found a note saying “I’m coming back.”
Dad’s childhood home was beautiful. It was located off the main road of town, hidden in the woods. You could get lost if you weren’t careful. It was white, with a large window in the front of it, two stories.
The indoors were breath-taking with wood paneled floors, a white stone fireplace, a winding black staircase, it was perfect.
The kids could run all of their energy out.
On the top floor, there were four bedrooms, a bathroom, and a study. On the second floor, there was a kitchen, a living room, and a playroom for the kids. Teddy and Keene had refurbished the house well with some modern day furniture.
I cannot stress how beautiful it was.
We viewed it. Proud of the house we built.
I wrapped one hand around Keene’s hip and placed one on his chest.
“Good job, babe.” I congratulated.
He kissed my hair, “Thank you.”
We moved out of Keene’s apartment. It was hard to see the memories gone.
Keene and I stared at the empty apartment, thinking about everything that’d gone on here.
That day he found me in the woods, then told me he was joining the army, but wasn’t going to give me up for it.
The way I’d comforted him after we’d found out about his father. All those times in the bedroom….
And when I’d told him I was pregnant. Coming home enjoying our family.
Seeing it all go away brought a tear to my eye.
But, we were going to make more memories.
I woke up, smiling. Our new place was growing on me, and today was a great day.
July, 7th.
The kids’ birthday was today. We’d invited Teddy, Jillian, my mom, Quinna, Shay, Tony, Maria, Clara, and a few of their friends from school.
Keene and I were on edge the entire time, awaiting the arrival of Tyler anyday now.
I put five candles on the cake.
It was interesting how close our birthdays were.
Mine was on May 11th, Keene’s was on August 15th, and the kids’ birthdays were on July 7th.
More notes came for us in the mail.
We had to react when the latest one came.
“Cute kids. If you were smart, you’d meet me at the following address: 226 Eastmoor Dr. Asheville, NC. Tuesday. 8pm sharp. Be there… or else.”
“What the hell is this? An action movie! This is so stupid, Kamie! Why don’t we just turn him into the police?!” Keene asked me.
I looked him in the eyes, “You don’t Tyler. When he wants to do something… he does it. He’s not going to give up until he gets what he wants.”
“What does he want?”
I took a step forward, looking into his eyes, and I whispered,
“Me.”
