Chapter 33: We Are Young
“Happy birthday.” I whispered, kissing Keene’s neck.
I sat on him, waiting for him to wake up.
He groaned as he rubbed his eyes, “What?”
Today is August 15th. Happy birthday.” I smiled.
He returned it. My god was I thankful for his smile; he hadn’t smiled in at least two months.
“Thank you.” He chortled.
“Do you know what you’re first gift is?” I ask.
He shrugged.
“Oh, well… you’ll be pleasant surprised.”
I put our lips together, lingering for a long time.
I was very proud of myself for coming up with Keene’s party plans.
He hadn’t request a celebration, but he liked parties.
I baked him a cake.
Red velvet: his favorite.
“I made you breakfast cake!” I sang as we entered kitchen.
He replied, “Oh yeah. You know that old saying have sex, eat some cake.”
We sat down at the table; I cut a piece of cake and set it on his plate.
“Thanks…. What do you want to do today?”
“Well, it your birthday, but I did plan something.”
He eyed me with fake suspicion as he popped a piece of cake in his mouth.
“Where are we going?” He asked.
I smirked, “We are to have the best time- I’ll tell you that much.”
“Where are we going?” He asked again
“Camping with Jillian, Teddy, and Quinna.”
His face lit up; he loved camping.
“Go pack your stuff.” I smiled.
He jogged to the bedroom. I sat at the table, alone only with my thoughts. “You only turn twenty once!” I shouted to Keene.
I gave Keene the directions to the campground- which was located in Buckhorn, Kentucky- and we were packed and on the way.
It was dark by the time we pulled in the long gravel road lined with pine trees.
Jill greeted us with open arms.
“Chica!” She shouted.
It’d been at least a month since I’d last seen her.
“Hi!” I replied, wrapping my arms around her neck.
This cabin was fairly large, wooden planks wrapped around the rectangular building.
The roof and window panes were dark green; it very much a resembled a Lincoln Logs house.
Keene carried our bags- which we’d hurridly packed-into the living room.
It was very nice there. The north wall had a fireplace carved from stone in the middle of it, burning with furious flames.
“So what do you guys feel like doing?” Teddy asked, coming out of the kitchen.
Our eyes locked for a second, and I pulled my attention back to Keene.
