Chapter 16: Lovebug
Kamie
I pulled my math book out of my locker first. I found it utterly rediculous that we were forced stacks of books that weighed more than half of our body weight, but I had no choice other than to carry them.
I shut the door and spin around on the balls of my feet.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!’
I almost screamed.
Keene held out a bouquet of roses. They were vibrant with a scarlet color.
“Okay, you’re gonna have to stop scaring me like that.” I say, fumbling with my loose reading book. It hurdled toward the floor. Keene caught it with his one free hand.
“Wow. Very… Spiderman of you.” I titter.
“Thanks.” He smiles boastfully.
I situate my papers into a congruent pile with my textbooks.
“Oh, uh… theese are for you.” Keene says offering me the flowers.
I was completley caught off guard.
“Aww. Thanks.” I say gratefully, smelling them.
He seemed to be very thankful of my reaction.
“Oh. I got you something, too.” I say.
He excidetly rubs his hands together.
I reach into my purse and pull out a chocolate box then hand it to him.
“Aw. Thanks. You didn’t have to get me anything, though.” He says.
I raise an eyebrow at him.
“Really?”
“Ok, it would have kinda sucked if you didn’t get me anything.” He admits.
“Yeah. I know.” I say.
We lock hands and walk to our next class.

KEENE
I got home from school that day, feeling much better, only because of Kamie.
I couldn’t get her smile out of my mind, I think about her eyes all the time.
“Dad?” I shout.
“Hey, son.” He responds, flagging me over from the couch.
“So how are you today?” I ask him
“How are you?” He retorts. “I asked you first.”
“Great. Now how are you?”
“Fine, dad.”
“Ok, then I need to tell you something.” He says, clicking the TV off with the remote.
Oh, god. I cling to the couch with my fingertips, bracing myself for the bomb.
“I went to the doctor today.”
“And?” I egg.
I sighs then scratches his head. “You know you remind me of your mom. She would give me the same reaction when I said something like that.”
“Dad, quit stalling.” I command angrily.
He blows out his mouth. “The tumor has gotten bigger. But it’s okay because-”
“No, ugh, god dad!” I say, immediately standing up, throwing my hands to the back of my head, recovering from the detonation.
“Keene, its fine. Because-”
“No, dad, it isn’t! Nothing is! YOU ARE DYING, DAD! Please, just for once listen to me.” The tears welled up, I wiped them away. I wasn’t as upset as I was angry. My body shook with anger; my hands trembled; trying to supress the screaming I wanted to do.
“Well. We need to be happy. Mom-”
“Mom would not-”
“Keene, would you let me finish a god damn sentence?” His voice became gruff.
I fell aimlessly onto the couch, hiding my face in my fingers.
“Mom would want me to be happy.”
“NO SHE WOULDN’T, DAD! PLEASE, PLEASE JUST LISTEN TO ME! I KNOW THAT’S SO GOD DAMN HARD FOR YOU, BUT I DON’T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU!”
“Watch your mouth, boy.” He smiles.
I had enough, again he wasn’t listening.
I grabbed my coat from my room then ran back down the steps to the living room; I picked up my keys from the counter.
“Where the hell do you think you’re going?” Dad asks me, still lounging on the couch.
“I can’t do this anymore. I can’t sit by with a smile pasted on my face and pretend that everything’s okay. Nothing is okay.”
I turned the doorknob.
“Son, you walk out that door and that’s it. You’re not allowed under my roof again.”
I took a breath, thinking intently.
“I’m sorry dad.”
And that was it, it was over.
