Chapter 45: Possibility

Keene and I talked in the car, “Last year… when I left… how did you….”

I shuttered whenever he mentioned that.

I knew what he meant, “Cope?”

He nodded. “I learned how to…numb the pain. But, that meant lying to myself,” he looked down guiltily, “and it also made me realize that it’s you. It’s always been you. And that I need you. I didn’t care how you came back… it’s just that you came back.”

He kissed my cheek. “You know I’m sorry for that, right?”

“Yeah, I know.” We sat for a second.

“Okay, my turn,” I shifted towards him, Why did you leave, exactly?”

He took a deep breath, “When my dad got sick, I thought I’d be sad all  of the time… and I didn’t want that to affect us, so I thought it be easier with….”

“A clean break,” I finished.

“Exactly,”

“Then tell me something.” I begged.

“Anything,” He agreed.

“Exactly why the army?”

He smirked, “Lord, you’re curious.”

“Tell me, please? This is the first time we’ve actually talked in a year.”

He chuckled lightly, “I never told you about my mom?”

I shook my head, already feeling guilty.

“She was in the Persian Gulf War… and… she was injured by a bullet. She died in surgery, lost to much blood. The bullet hit an artery in her neck, but… she purposely jumped in front of all the men to save them.”

I nodded, “I didn’t know that.”

“You learn something new everyday.”

I smiled and for a spilt second I felt at ease, but then fear struck my gut.

“What happens if….” I let my voice trail off.

“If what?” He asked.

I closed my eyes to try to keep my voice from breaking, “If…there’s a possibility that we don’t make it through this? And that we end up like one of those tragic love stories?”

He chuckled slightly, “Haven’t you noticed? We’re tragically beautiful.”

I was angry now, “That’s not my point!”

“Then what is?”

“…The point is…. You’ve changed my life… thank you.”

We looked at each other and smiled.

I cortled, “Road.”  I directed his attention to the interstate ahead of us.

“Right,” he agreed.

“You know what?”

“What?”

“In a way, I’m sort of glad to be here with you right now.”

He beamed, “Me too.”

“I’m glad you kept me even though I’m broken.”

He laughed again, but then was serious, “I can’t promise that’ll fix all your problems, but I’ll make sure you won’t have to face them alone. Even though you’re heart is the most mangled, damaged, mutilated thing I’ve ever known.”

I looked at him this time, “My heart is perfect… it stills beats, and it’s better now because your inside it.”

“I’m just really glad that we still feel that way about each other, you know?”

He smirked smugly as he looked at me, “I make you feel nervous. A good nervous….  I make you breathe unevenly, and I lovr every minute of it.”

“And you make my heart race faster and faster,” I add, “I like that feeling.”

“You are a damn good kisser.” He added.

I smile smugly, “You aren’t so bad yourself.”

My heart started hammering painfully on my chest.
