Chapter 40: Sweet Child O’ Mine
Eight Months:
Keene
I sat on the couch, Kamie’s head rested on my shoulder. I was tuned into Cake Boss which was playing on the TV.
“Ooh, I want some cake. Keene, buy me a cake.” Kamie mused.
“Um…what?”
“I want cake.”
“Kamie, be resonable.”
She sat up abruptly, groaning, “Oh my god.”
I threw my hands up defensively.
“Okay, I’ll get you cake!”
“No, no,” she grimaced, her hands over her stomach. “Oh, god.”
“Is it the baby?” I questioned, fear saturating my voice.
She nodded slowly, unsure.
Kamie
As soon as I answered, he was frantically zooming around the room; he darted upstairs and was back in an instant, this time carrying a suitcase.
He’d tossed our toothbrushes in it.
He grabbed the lamp off the side table, harshly yanking the plug out of the outlet.
“Keene, honey. What are you doing?”
“Packing.”
“For what?”
“We have to go to the hospital.”
“The hospital has lamps.” I injected. He ignored me, shoving the lamp farther into the fabric.
Pain smothered me, “Mom!” I shouted.
“Just a second!” She shouted.
A few minutes later, her footsteps approached until she was in the room.
“What is it dear?”
I pointed to Keene, “He’s going all Lohan over there.”
She placed a comforting hand on his forearm. “Keene, darling. What’s going on?” Her voice was soothing, wanting to lull me to sleep.
“Kamie’s having the baby…now.”
The same pain I had layered me.
I shuttered.
They both sharply turned my way.
“Really?” Mom questioned, her eyes fearful.
“I don’t know, it just hurts.” I stated.
“Oh,” she said, relief blanketing her voice, “honey that’s normal.”
“It is?”
“Of course, baby.” She affirmed, chuckling.
I was relieved, not as much as Keene, but I was relieved.

I thought about my dream from the other night, and how I knew my dad was speaking to me. I’d always understood what he meant. I knew he was going to take care of me. That didn’t ring true until two weeks later.
