Chapter 6: Carry On
The next day was much better. I didn’t feel so much out of my comfort zone.
Things went much smoother between Keene and me. In science class- while our teacher caught up with his disturbed sleep schedule- we all talked about the weekend.
“Hey, Kamie!” There was a tap on my shoulder. I spin around in my seat and see Keene’s sculpted face.
“Hi, Keene!” I say, probably to enthusiastically.
“What are you doing this weekend?”
My stomach twists into knots. Is he gonna ask me out? Nah, he’s not gonna ask me out. Oh, but he’s so… amazing. The chills I got when he spoke ran up and down my spine.
“Oh, um… nothing.” I say innocently.
“Me neither.”
I’m still just sitting here, waiting for you to finish your sentence. But, it was finished. And you’re NOT asking me out.
A boy grasped his attention. Immediately, I turned to Jill.
“Jill, I need your help.”
“Sure, Bonita.”
“I need an excuse to go out with Keene tomorrow.”
She thought of an answer for a second, and then swiftly turned to a boy beside her.
“Hey, Chris. Wanna go to the movies with me this weekend?” She says, playing with her dangling earrings.
“Uh, Jillian, I have a girlfriend.”
“I’ll let you touch my butt.” She says, giggling.
“Okay, and my name’s not Chris.” He says quickly.
Being very careful, Jillian stands up on the top of her desk and shouts to the whole class.
“Hey, people! Chris and I-”
My name is Tony!” The boy interupts.
“Shh!” She says, pointing a finger at him.
“Tony… and I are going to the movies tomorrow. The following people are invited: Kamie-”
She bends down and we high-five.
“Keene,” she continues “Rosalie, Karen, Alice, Nathan, Jacob, Makena, and Isabella.”
Everyone starts buzzing about the previous announcement.
“Thanks, hermana.” I say.
“Gracias.” She replies.
I automatically turn back to Keene who is already facing my direction, waiting for me to respond.
“So, I guess it’s a date- I mean… a friendly gathering.” Keene smiles.
“Yeah, I guess.” I say back.
“Do you need a ride?” He asks me.
Oh my god! I’m counting this as him asking me out.
“Yes. That’d be awesome.” I say honestly.

I got home and immediately started looking for an outfit to wear.
No Spiderman; Jill’s #1 rule. A dress was too formal, though.
“Guys like when girls wear red.” Jill said again.
I decided my red Aeropostale t-shirt was good. According to Jill, it made me look even skinnier than I already am.
