Straight after a grand banquet ended, Wei Ying and his siblings made their way to Lotus Pier for the first time since it's demise. The chains from long ago returned, wrapping around Wei Ying's lungs as they approached the entrance, a heavy feeling of anxiety he hadn't really felt since the night everything fell apart. It was safe to say, the chains weren't missed.
As his chest tightened, Wei Ying stood before the front doors and pushed, walking back into his home.
It didn't feel like home.
Nowhere felt like home.
Wei Ying's lips trembled at the blood, at the tall Wen flags standing proud with their accomplishments. What once was home was now tainted with red. with the horrors he'd once seen.
Looking around, Wei Ying's eyes caught moments of his past, flashes of being taught how to use a bow, bonding with his uncle through training. He remembered the first moment he felt like part of the family, beside the one where he realized he wasn't.
He didn't feel like family, he hadn't for a long time.
Does family abandon family?
Does family abuse you?
The sizzling of Zidian brought him out of his past and made his hair stand up, goosebumps covering his skin, he tensed as he turned to the weapon in time to see it tear apart two ravens. The painted clay fell apart, and with it, the Wen Clan's reign on Lotus Pier.
Jiang Cheng was then seen speaking to their clan members, "I, Jiang Cheng," He began, Wei Ying smiled, eyes watering, "As the son of Jiang Fengman and Yu Ziyuan, from now on, officially succeed as clan leader of Yunmeng Jiang. The discipline of the Jiang Clan is to attempt the impossible... as long as I still breathe I'll devote to the core value of our clan, I will not allow another disaster to happen to our clan again!"
...
Jiang Fenqman watched his son proudly, as did Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Yanli, small smiles on their faces. This relaxed, proud feeling they were getting as well as the nice atmosphere, was a wonderful change from the constant heartache.
...
The many disciples bowed before him, "Clan-Leader-Jiang!" They cheered.
It was over. Finally, everything was over. Of course, Wei Ying would not at all have an easy time from now on, he had lies upon lies to keep covered, and trauma he was dying under, but he could rest now. Or so he thought.
The next few days he spent hiding, either on the river or in a tavern, he knew if he was in Lotus Pier he'd be forced to do his job.
It wasn't that he didn't want to, he wanted so badly to perform as Jiang Cheng's subordinate. That was always his plan, his dream, to spend his life with his family, upholding the value of the Jiang sect...But he could no longer be that. He couldn't train disciples, he didn't have the energy to follow Jiang Cheng around, he couldn't carry his sword, he couldn't do anything.
He was useless.
...
Jiang Cheng whimpered, listening, as guilt consumed him, "I'm sorry you felt like that because of me, Wei Wuxian," Jiang Cheng told him.
"Don't be," Wei Ying said, "I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise."
"I don't care about that anymore, I just care about your health and happiness," Jiang Cheng said, "I'm sorry for everything."
