When Mom is Away...

"DADDY! DADDY! IT'S TIME TO GET UP!" Rain's voice shouted at him, and before he had time to react, he could feel her little body crashing on top of his, which caused him to groan.

Right on que, he could hear Everett's cries coming from the baby monitor. And as guilty as he felt about it, he couldn't help but groan softly. As much as he loved his children, he didn't like that Rain didn't seem to have a grasp on how great sleep was. And as soon as Rain was up, Everett followed.

But, his children were some of the best things in his life. And being a Father gave him a purpose in his life that he didn't know he was missing until he held Rain in his arms for the first time. Which was why when it came down to deciding which one of the 2 of them gave up their job as a Ninja, he happily volunteered.

Being a Father was much more rewarding than being a Ninja, at least, in his own personal opinion.

Of course, that also meant that Nya had to leave, and sometimes she would be gone weeks at a time on missions. And it sucked, they both knew that. But they also couldn't leave the team and Ninjago without 2 members.

Evil never sleeps, and he has a fear that something is going to happen to her. It was a fear that probably stemmed from Nadakhan and Djinnjago, but he couldn't bring himself to tell Nya about it. Not when she was already feeling so guilty about having to leave in the first place.

Especially not then.

"I'm up, dewdrop." Jay yawned, standing up and stretching his limbs before giving his daughter a tired smile.

It was a little bit easier right now with Nya being gone all the time because Rain didn't understand what was happening enough at 4 to ask questions. And Everett was only a couple of months old, so he knew he had a long time before Everett started asking questions. But, he knew that he was on a timer. They both knew, and Jay dreaded every second of it.

Both of their children loved Nya.

And he didn't know how to explain the possibility that their Mother might leave one day and never come back.

"Why don't you head down while I go grab Everett and we'll make pancakes. How does that sound?" Jay asked, crouching down to give Rain a hug.

"YES! YES! YES!" Rain screeched, quickly jumping out of the hug and rushing down the stairs like her life depended on it.

He couldn't help but smile. As much as he liked being a Ninja, he loved being a Dad even more. In his opinion, being a Father was far more important than saving Ninjago every single day. He would have been lost without them. He would have been lost without Nya. He loved the life that they built together, even if they weren't planning on starting it when they did.

Jay headed down to the nursery and picked up Everett from the crib that he was crying in. He hummed quietly and rocked the small body back and forth in what he hoped was soothing.

He didn't quite know how to do the parenting thing even though he had been doing it for 4 years. He knew he wasn't perfect by any means. And he always lived in this constant fear that he was going to make a mistake so big that it would mess up the rest of their kids lives.

"Let's go get your bottle, Everett. I think your sister is being impatient." Jay said with a small smile.

Of course, that turned into a wince when almost immediately after, a loud crash came from downstairs, which of course then turned into crying coming from Rain.

She took way too much after him.
