Chapter 51

The morning of the expedition approached quickly, soon enough we were on our horses waiting for the gate to open.

"Titans in the vicinity have been lured away, gate opens in 30 seconds!" Someone shouted.

I gripped my reins tightly in my hands, despite being on many expeditions within the last 5 years, the anticipation of waiting to leave was always nerve wracking.

"This is it, the time has come for humanity to take another step forward! Let's show those titans what we're made of!"

Everyone cheered as the gate opened.

"Forward!" The commander shouted before he clicked his reins and rode forward, everyone else copied the motion and rode through the gate.

"It's officially begun, the 57th recon mission!" The commander shouted, "Scouts move out!"

On my right I saw the support squad fighting off a titan so we could pass.

"Forward! Ride for all you're worth!" The commander shouted.

Once we had cleared the city ruins, the long range scouting formation was deployed. We were positioned behind the centre wagon on standby, the safest place in the formation.

For the next hour or so, no titans were spotted by us, the most we did was relay smoke shells.

"Smoke signals, green." Levi muttered, "Oluo pass it on."

"With pleasure sir." He replied shooting off a green smoke signal.

"Reporting sir!" Someone shouted as they approached us, " It appears the right wing spotters have been entirely wiped out! The early warning network is compromised, someone will have to relay the message further down the line!"

"You heard the man Ash." Levi said turning to me.

"Sir!" I shouted before turning and riding to the closest squad to my left.

I rode for awhile until I saw people up ahead, I approached them and repeated what the man had said previously.

"Reporting! The right wing spotters have been wiped out! The early warning network is compromised, someone will have to relay the message further down the line!" I shouted.

I watched as someone went to relay the message and I returned to my original position. On my arrival black smoke shells were drifted in the air.

"An abnormal?" I thought to myself as Eren shot off a black flare.

"This is a disgrace. A lot of good the formation does if those bastards can bore into it that deeply." Levi muttered to himself.

Soon enough we came upon a forest, the centre ranks entered it while the side ranks were forced to go around.

"Why break up the formation to come into the forest? It makes no sense." I thought to myself as we rode along the path.

"Captain! Captain Levi!" Eren said.

"What."

"C'mon sir, we're in a forest! We won't see a titan until it's right on top of us!" He said, " The centre rank's totally cut off, something's coming up on the right isn't it? So what are we supposed to do, fight titans or defend the wagons?!"

"Quit whining and move on from the obvious already. Neither of those are an option anymore." Levi said.

"What- what are you talking about?"

"Haven't you noticed what's around you? Take a look at these big ass trees. Perfect environment for odm gear don't you think? Take my advice, calm down and use your head."
