8) First Day

Taehyung rushed towards the elevator of the hospital, stopping it just in time before the doors closed. He released a sigh once he was inside. He was late, again. Everyone in the hospital already saw him as arrogant and cold, he wouldn't be surprised if they started seeing him as lazy and unprofessional too. He hated it. There was a time when he was the epitome of punctuality and professionalism, but now he was a prime example of 'how not to be, when you're a doctor.' it's not that he cared about people's opinion one way or the other, but it would be nice not to be the topic of gossip among his coworkers at least once.

"Penny for your thoughts." Taehyung flinched when he heard the sudden voice and looked behind. He sighed in relief when he found that it was his colleague and friend Jung Hoseok.

"Geez Hobi, are you trying to give me a heart attack early in the morning?" he asked, mildly annoyed at his friend for scaring him.

"It's not my fault that you don't look at your surroundings. I mean, there are just two of us in this elevator and still you didn't see me. So tell me, what's on your mind today?" Hobi asked, walking out of the elevator with his friend.

"Nothing new, just the usual." Taehyung said, walking alongside him.

"You still haven't found a caretaker for your daughter?" Hobi asked.

"On the contrary, I just hired someone this morning, hence the reason for me being late." he answered.

"That's great dude, but why don't you look happy about it? I thought you'll be ecstatic to find someone after almost giving up." Hobi said, making Taehyung frown.

"It's just well it's complicated I guess. That reminds me Hobi you're a neurologist right?" he asked, making Hobi look at him like 'what the fuck'

"Don't tell me that you don't know what my field of specialization is after being friends for 2 years?" Hobi said, faking disappointment.

"Of course I know that, but it's not something you always think about, you know and today I was reminded of it when you asked me about Eunie's caretaker." Taehyung said, making Hobi confused.

"What do you mean?" Hobi asked.

"Well like I said it's complicated. The person I hired as Eunie's caretaker claims that he has amnesia and doesn't remember his name or anything about his past life. Now I have no way of knowing if he's actually telling the truth or faking it for some reason. Mrs. Song, Eunie's previous caretaker had found him lying unconscious, injured and bleeding in front of her shop and had taken him in.

And when he had woken up he didn't have his memory. Mrs. Song wants me to help him since I'm a doctor, even though I told her that I'm a doctor of heart, not head and apparently the boy needed a job and a place to live, so she suggested the caretaker job to him. So I decided to hire him on a trial basis. Do you think you can give him an examination and see if he's telling the truth about his amnesia or not?" asked Taehyung.

"If you don't trust him, why did you hire him in the first place and Taehyung you are a doctor yourself. You should know it's practically impossible to tell if someone is lying about having amnesia. But if he had a head injury like Mrs.Song mentioned then maybe I could give him an MRI to see if there's a clot or something. Why don't you bring him to my office so I can give him an examination?"

"Well to answer your question I don't know why I gave him the job. It sounds really insane when I think about it, but to be honest he didn't look like he was lying. He looked kind of lost and desperate. You can say I kind of felt bad for him and boy can he cook. Trust me when I say this Hobi, his hands have magic. He cooked the most delicious food I've ever had in my life for breakfast today. Even Eunie finished everything without any tantrums. He said he didn't know how he made the food and that it felt familiar to him, like he had done it before."
