Chapter Forty Nine

The glass behind me shattered. I blacked out.

Tobias' POV

The glass shattered behind Tris. She fell over. I rushed over to her. I picked her up like a baby and carried her out of the infirmary. I carried her to Evelyn's house. I kicked the bottom of the door. Evelyn answered immediately.

"Tobias come in." Evelyn said

I walked in. She closed the door behind me. I set Tris on the couch.

"What happened?" Evelyn asked

"She keeps getting attacked by Erudite." I said

Tris' POV

I woke up in Evelyn's house. Evelyn looked at when she saw I was awake. She came over to me and helped me sit up. Tobias quickly noticed and helped me. There was a pain in my back. The ringing started again. I bolted up and rushed into a corner. I crouched down and covered my ears.

"What is she doing?" Evelyn asked

"Jack is trying to control her. He makes a high pitched ring in her ears and I think there is more to it than that." Tobias said

Tears streamed down my face.

"Please. Stop. Please." I whispered

"I have never seen a Dauntless beg for mercy before." Evelyn said

"Please Jack. Please. I can't help you. You know that and doing this won't help." I whispered

The ringing stopped. I sank to the floor. I took my hands down from my ears.

"Its almost as if it drains her of her strength. I can't believe Jack would do this." Evelyn said

Tobias picked me up and placed me on the couch.

"You can take her to the bedroom upstairs." Evelyn said

"Thank you mom." Tobias said

He carried me to Evelyn's bedroom. There was a knock at the door. Evelyn opened it.

"Hello. May I help you?" Evelyn said

"Hello Ms. Johnson. I am Zeke. I work closely with Four and Tris in Dauntless. I just wanted to see if they were here." Zeke said

"Come in. I will be right back." Evelyn said

Evelyn came upstairs.

"Tell him we are here. Its okay. I trust him." I said

Evelyn went back downstairs.

"Upstairs." Evelyn said

Zeke came up the stairs. He found us in the bedroom.

"I just wanted to let you know, Erudite and Candor are talking about taking down Dauntless. Their first attack will probably be on a leader. Then once the faction is in chaos, Jeanine will probably destroy or control the whole faction." Zeke said

I sat up.

"I know what she wants." I said

"How long have you known what she wanted?" Tobias asked a little too harshly

"Ever since the attacks on me. I know exactly what she wants and to get it shes going through me. To get to you." I said

"What does she want with me?" Tobias asked

"She wants-" my voice faltered "she wants-"

I couldn't tell him. I couldn't let him hand over his faction and a confession.
