When they got to the bunker, they almost rushed in, but no one had been there.
Apparently they had arrived in time before the knights. Relieved, Josie collapsed onto her bed and fell asleep with her shoes and guns on. Despite tiredness, Dean felt strange, something didn't let him rest. His arm ached and the mark felt like it was glowing. In desperation, the Winchester put an ice pack on it and went to bed.
However, it didn't last long and the burning became unbearable. He crept through the bunker and noticed the symbol change. It seemed to glow and got brighter the closer he got to the archive. As quietly as possible he opened the door and entered. Instinctively he walked towards a wall and put his hand on the bare concrete. The wall looked as if it had always been there, but Dean could sense that something was hidden behind it. Something he wanted. something he needed. Remotely controlled, he got a pickaxe and came back. The fact that it was the middle of the night didn't bothered him at that moment. With all the strength he had, he hacked at the concrete.
"Dean? What are you doing?" asked Josie and Sam, drawn in by the noise.
Dean was fully in his tunnel and kept banging on the wall until suddenly a tiny hole appeared. The other two looked at each other in surprise. No one would have expected that the bunker had hidden rooms.
"Hand it to me," Sam ordered and took the pickaxe from his brother.
Sam had more energy than Dean, who actually could barely stand. With a few strokes the hole grew larger and the younger Winchester ventured a peek inside. The room was no bigger than his closet and in the middle of it was a massive safe.
"How did you get the idea that a safe is hidden here?" Josie wanted to know from Dean.
"I don't know, it was pure intuition," he admitted, squinting at the symbol, "The mark will lead you to the weapon"
"You mean the blade is in here?" Sam frowned and broke a piece of concrete out of the wall.
"What else would you hide in there?"
"No matter what's in there, it'll have a reason the Men of Letters walled it up like that," feared Josie.
With a few powerful blows, the wall collapsed and completely exposed the safe. Outside there was a cloak symbol on each side so no one could locate the inside. The closet itself was ancient, Sam speculated that it was even older than the bunker itself.
"How do we get it open?" Dean asked, looking at the metal cabinet.
"Are you sure we should even open it?" the huntress murmured skeptically, "You don't know what the ramifications might be, even if it's Cain's blade it could end badly"
"If it's 'the first blade' then we need that weapon, without it we can't end this war and more people have to die," Dean said confidently.
But those who used this safe were not stupid. It wasn't easy to crack, nor was it easy to pry open. Luckily Sam had read about a specific box, he just didn't understand what it was. But now everything made sense. He knew what it takes to get inside. While Sam fiddled around, Josie and Dean waited anxiously for that one moment.
"Great", the older brother sighed when the younger one held out another metal box, "What is this, a matryoshka? There better not be another box"
The closer Dean got to the box, the harder it was for Sam to hold on to it. For that within wanted to come out and serve its master. Josie backed away, worried, expecting the worst. Dean slowly opened the lid and frowned. Inside the box was a bone wrapped in cloth. You could see through the fabric that something was glowing behind it, the same shade of red and gold as the mark. Dean carefully unwrapped the strange thing and looked at it.
"Is that a piece of a jaw?" Sam snapped more than confused, "I expected a lot but no bone"
Paralyzed, Dean grabbed the handle and closed his eyes as an overwhelming feeling overcame him. He had never felt anything like it before. He felt invincible and something was spreading inside him as well. The urge to kill.
"Hey, is everything okay? How do you feel?" Josie asked quietly and closed her hand around Dean's forearm.
"I feel great," Dean replied, and this time it wasn't a lie.
Fascinated, he looked at the knife in his hand and turned it on all sides. A satisfied smile graced his lips, which worried Sam and Josie slightly.
"Dean, how about you put the blade back and rest, then we'll take care of the knights," Sam suggested and already held out his hand, but his brother just gave him a warning look.
"Sam's right, put the bone down and go to sleep, you need it badly!" Josie agreed with her friend.
Thoughtfully, Dean looked at the blade and found it difficult to overcome himself. The urge to use it was great, but he knew it wasn't him who wanted to kill. To stop that, he put the jawbone back in the box, which Sam quickly closed before Dean could change his mind.
"For real, are you okay?" Josie asked and grabbed Dean's hand.
He nodded hesitantly and took a deep breath.
"I'm going to hit the hay, good night," he whispered, wanting to pull Josie with him.
She was supposed to watch over him so that he wouldn't go on nocturnal excursions again. Besides, he slept better when she was with him.
"This is gonna be fun," Josie murmured ironically to Sam and looked after Dean.
"When this is over, we need to destroy the blade, or at least move it far enough away so that Dean can no longer attract it. Did you see his look that wasn't him anymore"
"No, even if he denies it, but the Mark of Cain changes him," Josie agreed.
