She slid closer to him and leaned her cheek against his upper arm. Her hand gripped his and stroked it reassuringly.
"I'd like to say something comforting, like 'everything will be fine' but I don't think that's going to help you, is it?" murmured Josie dejectedly.
"No, not really," he sighed with a blank look at the wall, "You put up pictures again," he noted with delight.
Irritated, the brunette lifted and looked at the collection of pictures on her wall, she had done so only yesterday afternoon.
"Yeah, luckily I was able to save a few, but hey now there's room for new ones. I could unpack the Polaroid camera again"
"I hope you're out of film rolls," he teased her.
"Hey, you're already kidding again" she giggled and put his arm around her shoulders.
Playfully, he pretended to put her in a headlock and headbutt her. The more she protested the tighter he held her. Slowly, the bad thoughts disappeared from his mind and the initially played foolishness actually cheered him up. If only temporarily.
"If you don't let me go, I'll bite you in the ribs!" she threatened seriously.
Hesitantly, he let go, but she didn't back away, instead resting her head in his lap. Innocent puppy eyes looked up at him as she lovingly caressed his cheek. His fingers, meanwhile, explored the skin around her collarbones. Josie had noticed the night before how much he longed for something so simple. She wanted to be the last one to deny him that in situations like this. Carefully, he brushed a strand from her face and traced her features with his fingertips.
"Did I ever actually tell you why I drive this Charger?" she began out of the blue.
Curious, Dean shook his head, utterly fascinated by her silky hair curling around his fingers.
"You know my dad was a mechanic and I spent half my childhood in his garage. He had had a rusted Charger sitting in the yard and we restored it together piece by piece. I always thought he would sell it, we could have really used the money. But he gave me the keys for my twentieth birthday and told me to take care of this baby, he had been working on it for 15 years with the intention of leaving it to me. Two weeks later he passed away in his workshop, he tinkered with his favorites until his last breath," she reminisced, "I couldn't even look at the car for the first while because I kept thinking about him, but at some point I realized that my old man certainly wouldn't have wanted that. So I pushed the Charger into the shop, gave it another tune-up, and went to the drive-in. Parked next to me was a run-down Opel Astra and sitting in it was Andy. Hey, when you get right down to it, it's my dad's fault that I met you!"
Irritated, the hunter frowned and just listened intently to what she was telling him.
"Well, thanks to my dad I had the Dodge, through the car I met Andy, and because of Andy I became a hunter and that led me to you," she explained, continuing to tap the steps on his chest.
