Shortly thereafter, he sank into a restless sleep. He kept humming to himself, squinting his eyes and even clenching his fists occasionally.
But while Josie stopped briefly at a gas station, Dean's subconscious woke up. He opened his eyes and got out of the car. Purposefully, he marched to the trunk and lifted the false bottom. From the store, Josie watched what Dean was doing. Hastily, she scrambled out her dollars and just tossed it to the cashier. If she didn't intervene quickly, it might end bloody this time.
"DEAN!" she yelled, running toward him, "What are you doing?"
He just reached for a gun and loaded it. Carefully Josie approached and spoke softly to the hunter.
"Hey, what do you need the gun for?" she inquired, least of all wanting to be the first victim.
"I'm going to end it," came monotonously from him.
"What are you going to end?"
"Me!" he replied confidently.
"Dean, no!", Josie fought back and didn't flinch for long.
With skillful blows she disarmed him and dropped the weapon on the floor. But in Dean only anger rose.
"You don't understand what it's like! I can't count the bodies anymore. I don't want to have to feel anything anymore, so let me get like that again," Dean growled, and you could hear the pain in his voice turn to blind rage as Josie continued to try to hold him off.
He grabbed her roughly and tried to push her off him, but she resisted and a second later she was lying on the trunk, writhing. Dean's hand grasped her throat and pressed her against the car.
"Dean! Fight the urge, I know you can. It's just the mark, it wants you back!" she gasped, clutching Dean's wrist with both hands.
From the store, the cashier ran out and pulled out his own rifle, pointing it at Dean.
"Let go of the lady now," the older gentleman ordered.
Dean turned his head in his direction, desperation simply visible in his eyes. Not hearing the Winchester, the man pulled the trigger and hit Dean in the shoulder. In pain, the stricken hunter staggered back, inevitably letting go of Josie.
"Ma'am, come here," the man pleaded with the slayer, but she slid off the trunk and supported Dean.
He held his wound, cursing, and breathed intermittently. Awakened from his trance, he tried to classify the situation.
"Miss, get away from him," the gas station attendant urged, slowly moving closer without putting the gun down.
"You don't understand, it's not his fault," Josie defended her friend and led him back to the passenger side.
"I know, I know, my sister was also beaten by her husband and didn't dare to report him, I'll help you, I saw what he did to you, the police have already been informed"
