Chapter 38

There is chaos in Mindanao and they need me. Napag-meetingan na namin ito at isa ako sa pupunta roon. I am an engineer and I have to plan and enhance the survival of other troops.

We need to build infrastructure for military bases, combat zones, and occupied areas.

I will be gone for so long, and I'm a bit disappointed. 

"Tapos na ang fifteen minutes," she rolled her eyes.

"What? It's too fas—"

Engineer Agdan suddenly came inside and accidentally saw us. I saw how embarrassed she was and walk out immediately.

Napangiti ako. "She's my wife anyway," I said to Engr. Agdan, then I took my things and went out.

Yes, I'm making the tutorial an excuse. Dahil gusto ko pa siyang makasama. Kasisimula palang namin pero kailangan ko na agad ang umalis.

So I took advantage of it. Gumawa pa 'ko ng fake account just to pretend as her customer—makuha ko lang ang oras niya. Pero mukhang ayaw niya 'kong kasama.

I don't drink alcohol. I don't smoke because I wanted to be the best man for Faith that I had been looking for so long. I still remember how she told me when we were so young that no one in her family drank alcohol.

I wanted to be part of her family, so I didn't practice drinking.

Nang makakita ako ng mikmik ay agad ko itong kinuha at binuksan. Bahagya pa akong napangiti nang muli kong naalala ang childhood namin.

Her face, her smile but. . . she's not that kid anymore.

Nakasanayan ko na rin talaga ang kumain ng mikmik sa tuwing may problema at kapag naaalala ko siya. It's just part of our memories that I can't move on.

'I miss you Eight. . .'

"S-Sir A?"

I stunned. Bigla na lamang akong kinain ng kaba nang marinig ko ang boses na iyon. My eyes widened when I saw her kaya bigla akong napaubo sa pagkasamid.

Damn!

Thank God you came!

I was waiting for you!

When Faith leaves the condo, my phone suddenly rings, and dad is calling. He was asking about G.

It's their flight tomorrow, but G ran away.

We don't really know what to do with him anymore. I really tried my best to help and approach him even I knew how much he hated me.

I've called him several times, but he's not answering the phone. I tried to trace his location, but he has now turned his phone off. 

Palagi niya na lang talaga kaming pinag-aalala.

"Rescue them!"

We all have an ear device, so we can all communicate.

"Roger!"

"'Huwag kayong lalampas sa linya. May paparating!"

"Handa!" at sunod-sunod na putukan ang aming narinig.

"Leave the area! Leave the area! Leave the area now!" maririin kong saad. "There's a bomb that is about to explode! Leave now!"

I am aware that Faith's internship is nearing its end. It is her third month already, and I am ready to go home.

"A!" Kenshin started when I answered his calls. "Bakit ngayon ka lang namin na-contact?!" he's worried. "Nag-aalala sina tita sa 'yo!"

"I'm fine," I said. "I called them already. Malapit na rin ang uwi ko," I added.

"Hay salamat naman!"

"How's G?" pag-iiba ko. "Bumalik na ba siya sa bahay?" pag-aalala ko.

Narinig ko ang mabigat niyang paghinga ng malalim. "Hindi pa, pero pinapahanap pa rin siya ni tito." I sighed. "I have good news, anyway!" he changed the topic. "It is confirmed that Faith Cabutihan was the one we've been looking for so long."

Natigilan ako. At bigla na lamang akong kinain ng kaba sa narinig. 

My heart was now beating so fast. "W-What?" I stuttered. "She's your childhood friend, A," he assured.

Bahagyang nanlamig ang aking mga kamay at nakaramdam ako na parang gusto ko ng umuwi agad. Para akong kakapusin ng hininga at hindi ko alam kung ngingiti ba 'ko o iiyak.

Bigla ko tuloy siyang naalala. 

Her eyes, her face, her smile, her lips, and everything about her. 

Our first day in the tutorial, her kissing drawings, how engineer Agdan saw us, how she slapped me so hard, my last night with her and how she kissed me so intently.

I remember everything since we met again.

Kaya ba ang gaan ng pakiramdam ko sa kaniya? I feel like I am always at home with her. She's my home anyway.

"H-How?" tila mangingilid ang aking mga luha. Finally!

"I will email you all her identification and confirmation that I've found out."

Agad akong napatango kahit hindi niya naman ako kita.

He sent me all her family background information, including their pictures, her kindergarten teacher, and their class picture when she was in kindergarten.

I still remember what her mom looks like.

Sobrang bilis ng tibok sa dibdib ko habang pinapanood ang mga larawan at binabasa lahat ng impormasyon tungkol sa kaniya.

May bahagyang luha ang pumatak sa aking pisngi. "But. . . she forget me already," I whispered out of nowhere.

'Wag mong kakalimutan ang Alphabetong Filipino.'

Tears started to fall from my cheeks when I remembered our time together. Our jokes and promises, which she forgets.

'Promise?'

'Ano 'yan?'

'Pinky promise, magpromise ka kuya!'

'Promise.'

Then I suddenly looked at my fingers, closed them, and opened my pinky finger.

Nang makauwi ay hindi na muna ako nagpakita sa kaniya kahit na gustong gusto ko na siyang puntahan at makita.

Pinagaling ko na muna ang aking mga naging sugat at galos.

May mga tinapos din akong gawain sa military office habang sa gabi naman ay sa contruction firm ako namamalagi para tulungan si Def doon.

'Tuloy pa rin po ba ang tutorial?' I received her text message.

A sudden smile formed on my lips when I read her message. I miss you.

You have no way out already, future Balitaan.
