It's the evening before we head back home. I'm currently at dinner with the brothers and their parents. Ran's sitting next to me in the the booth, Rindous across from me and their parents are next to Rindou.
It's the night before our flight, and Ran still hasn't told them about our breakup. That's the goal for this dinner.
I told him before we left to tell them now and he agreed. So here we are, awkwardly sitting here finding a perfect moment to tell them. I noticed that Rindou only picked at his food and would stare out the window next to us a lot.
Mrs. Haitani groaned, "I don't want to leave vacation here. We won't get to see you much anymore, Y/N." I smiled, "Yeah. I'll miss you." "Aw, I'll miss you too, sweetie." Rindou scoffed, "But you never miss us?"
Mr. Haitani was the one that spoke up this time, "We see you all the time on holidays." "Yeah. On holidays specifically. And not even all of them, just the big ones," Ran added to his brothers argument. Mrs. Haitani gave them a look, "We're really busy y'know?" "Yeah, so busy that you only come see us about four times in a year." "Rindou, don't cause a scene here." Their dad scolded. Rindou huffed in annoyance and went back to glaring out the window.
"I don't know why they're always so stubborn and picky," Mrs. Haitani said to me, plastering on a smile as she sipped her water. I forced a smile back. Ran seemed to be in a mood too.
"So what have you thought of doing after high school, Y/N?" I shrugged, "I don't know what I want to do yet, but I want to go to a nice college I guess." Mr. Haitani took interest in the conversation as well. "You still have a few years. Always got gap years too. You're also student council president correct? That's good for filling out applications," he explained.
"Oh, she won't need all that. She'll be marrying into the Haitani family after all," their mom smiled. Ran spoke up, "Mom, we...we're not-" "You're not engaged, I know you guys say that all the time. But you've already been dating for two years now."
Rindou was staring intensely at me. It made me a bit nervous. "Actually we're no-" "You two are absolutely adorable, don't you think, hun?" She asked her husband. Mr. Haitani nodded in agreement. Ran and I turned to each other. We both had made attempts to tell them but it was getting even harder. Rindous stare hadn't broken still. He seemed like he was waiting for us to tell them. If he actually likes me, this must not be fun to hear.
"I can't wait to have you as my daughter in law. We'll go shopping every day!" She gushed.
Honestly, I felt a bit guilty. Ran and I had pretend this whole time. But then again, we broke up months ago and Ran still hasn't told them so it's not like it's entirely my fault.
Ran saw the look on my face and tried again, "Were not toge-" I placed my hand over his. He turned to me confused. I shook my head.
Mr. Haitani's phone rang. "Sorry, guys, I have to answer this." We waited for a bit, and Mrs. Haitani said, "I need to go to the restroom. Be right back!" We could see their dad outside window. He was facing away, and speaking to someone on the phone. Us three looked at each other.
"So?" Rindou finally spoke up. "So what?" Ran asked. "Aren't you going to tell them?" "I-I don't know. They seem so happy about it, so I feel mean telling them we broke up," I explained. Rin shrugged, "You're gonna have to tell them anyways. Just get it over with before they start planning the wedding." Ran sighed, holding his head in his hand. I patted his back, "We got this."
He groaned and dropped his head onto my shoulder. Rindou leaned over the table and roughly pushed his head off.
Ran was about to argue with him but I started laughing. "You guys are too funny." Rindous eyes softened as he smiled at my laugh.
Mrs. Haitani returned, "I'm back you guys!" Mr. Haitani returned shortly after and we continued the dinner. After a few minutes of silence Rindou cleared his throat. Ran and I knew what he meant and straightened up. He nudged me with his elbow, signaling me to go first. I shook my head slightly and nudged him instead. He didn't tell them about it first, so he'll be the one doing it now.
He took a deep breath before saying, "Mom, dad, can I say something?" "Of course." "Yeah." Ran paused. Rindou kicked him under the table.
"Right, um...Uh- this was a really fun vacation." Their mom nodded, "I agree. I had a lot of fun!" "Yep, it was nice," Mr. Haitani agreed. Rindou rolled his eyes at him. I made an attempt to tell them next, "Uh so, you see..A while back, we- n-nevermind. I lost my train of thought."
Rindou slammed his fork on the table. "Rindou!" Mrs. Haitani scolded. "They broke up. That's what they keep trying to tell you. In fact, they broke up a while ago. They've been faking this whole trip." The table fell silent as they stared at Ran and I.
I pursed my lips. "Why didn't you tell us?" Their dad inquired. "I was going to but-" "No buts, Ran. Is this about the pocket money? Is that why?" Mrs. Haitani placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hold on. First off, can I ask why you broke up? Maybe we can fix this. Ran, I hope you know we really like Y/N. She's already made a public appearance as a Haitani and we all consider her part of the family and the business too. It better not be some stupid reason."
Ran and I glanced at each other. He seemed upset so I decided to talk, "Well, it wasn't anything Ran said. He's a great boyfriend." Rindou scoffed at that. He seems a bit jealous.
I continued, "But I just got a bit overwhelmed with the whole business thing and stuff. Like, its cool and everything, but it's just that it's associated with other underground businesses and I don't want that type of life later." Ran squeezed my hand under the table, staring at the tablecloth. "Oh sweetie, I completely understand. I didn't want to get involved with it either, but I still ended up marrying their dad. You eventually get used to it, and you get to be happy-" "Mom. She said she doesn't want to associate with it anymore so leave it be. If they broke up, that's that," Rindou said.
Mrs. Haitani wanted to say something else but didn't. We ended the conversation there. They were heading to another business trip in New York, so it was just Ran, Rindou, and me going back.
Their mom hugged me, "I'm going to miss you so much! Y'know what? Even if you two aren't dating, you should still come see us. You guys can still be friends." I nodded, "Yep. We're still good friends. I'll come visit."
She then hugged Rindou and went to Ran. While they hugged she whispered, "You better find a way to win her back." She pulled away, patting his back and left.
"Bye, you guys." "Bye!" "See you!" "Bye!" The ride to the airport was quiet. Even the plane ride was quiet. The only time we interacted was when we were back in Japan and waiting at baggage claim.
Ran hugged me, "Bye, Y/N. We should hang out more often. As friends." I returned the hug. "Yeah, we should. It was nice to see you again, though." "Yeah, you too-"
Rindou aggressively yanked him away from me. "My turn."
He threw his arms around me, and I hugged back. "It was fun. See you later in class." "See you."
"Y/NNN!!" Mikey shouted, running into my arms. I caught him but stumbled back. Draken and Baji followed behind him. They had been planning to come pick me up from the airport. He nuzzled his face into my shoulder.
"Gosh, I missed you so much! Come on, I brought Dorayaki!
