I'd said good night two hours ago, yet here I am, sitting near the window, staring down at the little cars passing through the city.
I don't know what time it is right now, but everyone here and in Japan is currently asleep. My ears picked up on only the sound of the air conditioning. I'm up right now, thinking about what everyone else is doing. How's break going to be for them? How would it be if I were there? I really wanna be there. I mean, I kinda wanna be here too, but I'd rather be here with someone else, and not my ex and his family.
I glanced over at Ran who had fallen asleep, and was quietly breathing, bundled up on the couch. I turned back to the window, and started following a car with my eyes until it disappeared onto a road that winded behind one of the taller buildings.
The clock kept ticking, turning minutes into hours.
I yawned, stretching, but still couldn't get myself to sleep. This happened often. But normally I didn't have anything important so I'd just pull an all nighter. Pulling an all nighter when we have that breakfast meeting tomorrow is not exactly the best idea. I need to get to sleep, but I can't get myself to move. My eyelids are starting to feel heavy too.
"Y/N?" I looked at Ran, who sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes after seeing me just sitting in front of the window. "You good?" I nodded, "Go back to sleep. Sorry for waking you." He stood up along with his blanket and made his way over, sitting down next to me.
He yawned, and wrapped the blanket around my shoulders. "No way. Have you not slept at all?" I had been caught, and hesitated in my answer, "Well, I slept on the flight-" "On the flight? No, you need to sleep right now too. Is the bed not comfortable? Is it too cold? We could get another room-" "No, Ran, everything's fine." He paused, "Is it one of those nights again?" I nodded, pulling the blanket closer around me. He turned towards the window, hiding his smile. "Remember when you would have those when we dated?"
I giggled, "Yeah. The first time, I was walking around with a blanket in your kitchen with the lights off and almost threw a spatula at you." He laughed, "You put a lot of power into that throw." "Hey, in my defense, you didn't even turn on the lights when you came downstairs, I got scared," I shrugged.
"Yeah. And that time when you couldn't sleep so we watched movies all night, and then woke up at like four the next afternoon." I smiled, "Yeah, and we decided to make pancakes and Rindou was judging us the whole time." We laughed together, remembering all the other nights I'd had with Ran where I couldn't sleep.
When the laughter faded, he grew a bit more serious, and shifted closer to me. "And do you remember how I'd put you to sleep when you had to wake up for class the next day?" It stayed silent for a while.
I do remember. It would be the most tiring days. Id be completely exhausted and drained and nothing could put me to sleep. I'd find Ran on those days, and he'd snuggle up with me, reading books about mythological events, while I traced the patterns on his tattoos. He'd just recently gotten them at that time. It'd put me to sleep in minutes, though. Probably because the books were so boring.
I nodded after a couple of minutes. "You really need to have energy for tomorrow," he said quietly. I sighed, "Y'know what? Tell me one of your mythological stories." I adjusted the blanket, and moved closer to him, so he could wrap up in it too. He pulled the blanket around both us, and started his story.
"Okay, so this one starts like a long, long, time ago, I mean, all of them do but this one is like very long ago, like in the BCs and stuff. Okay, anyways, there was this one dude named..."
As I listened to his story, the drifting off to sleep feeling started. I paid attention to the entire thing, though. Rans a very talented storyteller, even though he gets off track. The off track parts are my favorite, really.
