As we got closer and closer to prom, everything started getting busy again. It reminded me of the school festival when I saw everyone staying after school and helping with the decorations and the prom committee planning with us.
Right now, we were putting up decorations in the banquet hall the school booked for the event. I was in charge of making sure the decorations looked as they were supposed to on our draft. Inui had decided to tag along to make sure I wasn't overdoing anything since I'm still not completely healed yet. He leaned onto the wall next to me, standing with his arms crossed as I crossed things off the clipboard.
"Pres, can we put these up?" Someone asked. "They don't match the theme though," answered another student. I shrugged, moving closer to show them the clipboard, "It'd be okay if we put them over there," I suggested, pointing in the direction. They ran off to go put them up. I sighed, looking around. Everything seemed to be going well so far.
My treasurer was in charge of the refreshments and was in the kitchen area to check over everything there. My secretary was in charge of the main decorations, like the balloons and the lights. Except he seemed really annoyed since he's a perfectionist and was shouting at them to 'move things to the right' or 'hang them in a different angle' or 'do better'. Sorla was in charge of table decorations, like the tablecloths, chairs, and centerpieces. Only problem is, she's nowhere to be found.
All the people who were supposed to be working on them with her were just standing around awkwardly waiting for someone to show up. I sighed and walked over, deciding to look over everything there until Sorla decided she wanted to help. Inui followed me and I handed him my clipboard.
"Alright guys! Let's start with the tables until Sorla shows up. We need to get this done in a week or two. You three can start putting the tablecloths on, and you guys can start wrapping ribbons around the chairs. And us three can arrange the centerpieces. How do we feel about that?" I asked the group. Some of them nodded, agreeing but others protested about their roles. "Well, if you want, you can switch jobs with someone," I suggested. A lot of them did, swapping their roles to whichever one they thought would be more fun.
Me and two other people started unboxing the centerpieces and arranging them. Inui watched us, standing next to me. He would occasionally hand me things for it, and fix stuff if I had missed it. Eventually, he started helping too, and we finished pretty fast. Everything was going pretty smoothly.
That's when the chaos arrived, running into the banquet hall, accompanied by the sound of jingling keys and her bag in hand, shouting, "Guys, I'm here! Sorry, I woke up late and totally forgot we were supposed to do this today!"
Everyone shook their heads, disappointed at Sorla's excuse. I giggled and handed her the clipboard that she needed to check off. "We finished the centerpieces, so you'll just need to make sure everything else gets done. I'll go check how the main decorations are going." She nodded, taking the clipboard, looking over to where the secretary was, still irritated and yelling at everyone to do better. "Yeah, you might need to go do that," she responded, laughing at how the other students were stressed over him correcting them.
Inui followed me as I walked over there. I patted my secretary's shoulder, "Why don't you go take a break? I'll look over things here." "Fine," he groaned, walking away. I turned to everyone there who gave me thankful looks for saving them from his criticism. "Okay, so what else do you guys have left?" "We need to put the balloons up there, and the ribbons have to go there. Then we have to decorate the photo station too," a prom committee student said. "Alright, let's do it then."
We all started working on hanging up the decorations and if I noticed something that wasn't quite right, I'd fix it. Inui went to get a drink at one point. I stood there, crossing my arms and humming, inspecting the work so far. One of the balloon patterns had been messed up though. I climbed up the ladder going to fix it.
Inui totally flipped out when he walked back and saw me though. "Y/N, what're you doing?! What if you fall?" He sighed, holding the ladder steady. "I won't. Everyone else has been using it, and they're fine." "Well, yeah, but they're not still injured. You, on the other hand, are. Get down from there," he scolded. "Just let me fix this one balloon really quick," I argued back. He shook his head, "No. Come back down right now. I leave you alone for one minute, and this is what I come back to. You could've just asked me to do it or something." I sighed and climbed back down.
After that, he was extremely protective over anything I did. He'd use the lighter for me, hold anything that was slightly heavy, and absolutely refused to let me walk long distances, let alone climb things. He wouldn't even let me use the tape dispenser in case I cut my finger on it by accident. Everything was going pretty well though. I was proud of the progress we had made. Time flew by and eventually everyone noticed it was dinner time.
We brought everyone food from a restaurant nearby and all sat in a circle on the ground, not wanting to ruin the tables and ate dinner. It was definitely an experience. After eating and finishing up decorations, we all got bored and started playing hide and seek with the lights off. At this point, we were just goofing off, but we deserved it after working so hard.
I was hiding in one of the storage closets, and it had been a hot minute since anyone had found me. I stayed in there a while longer but no one seemed to come down that way, so I left my hiding spot, wondering what was going on.
The hall was completely empty now, and the lights were still off. It was silent, and I couldn't hear anyone talking. Did they all leave? What's going on?
I felt a bit nervous, wondering what had happened. I walked into the main hall, and it was also dark and quiet there. I could hear my footsteps and my breathing. It was a bit eerie, and I jumped at any slight sound.
Suddenly the lights turned on and everyone cheered. I stood there confused and stunned a little until Haru, the volleyball captain walked out, holding a poster.
The rest of the volleyball team started handing me roses as I made my way over. Everyone formed two rows around us, and clapped and cheered, but I was still confused until I walked close enough to see his sign which read, 'Will you go to prom with me?' in fancy letters. You could tell he put a lot of effort into it.
I covered my widening smile with my hand, nodding to him. Everyone cheered louder as I accepted the promposal. He opened his arms towards me, and I walked into them, hugging him. "Yeah, I will. This is so cute!" I laughed as we pulled away. "Haha, thanks. I was hoping you'd say that."
So, now I have a date to prom.
