Scott and Elder Camarillo were busy preparing the examination room for the births. They had made several cradles and large beds for the mothers.
No one was sure if they were having mortals or shifters. They planned to be prepared. Katey was the only sure one with a mixed blood of werewolf/millennialist. She told me that she told Scott that she would go to him when she was ready.
The others it depended on what their children tell them.
Quinn was in our kitchen having a snack after his patrol.
"How is Suzie doing Son?" Paddy asked him.
"She is ... I am worried about her."
"That is normal. I worry about your mother all the time."
"No Dad. This is different when she is asleep I listen to her heartbeat. It is not as strong as it used to be. It skips a beat in every ten. It never did that before." He looked very worried. "I know Scott is concerned he comes and checks on her now. He is there every four hours."
"It is her age Son. She is a mortal."
"I know." He nodded. "I know."
He stood up to leave. "Thanks for the snack Mom." He kissed my cheek then left.
We looked at his plate. He never touched it.
"I know how he feels. I am not able to eat either the closer you are to birthing. It is harder for me. You do not have a heartbeat."
I touched the side of his face. "I see it in your face. It looks exactly like Quinn's right now." I kissed his forehead. He pulled me onto his lap. "Then I see the relief on your face when the child is born." He held me tight.
"The relief of knowing you are no longer in pain and the child has survived." I sat on Paddy's lap for a while just holding each other.
Quinn came running in a few hours later.
"The baby ... Suzie's pains have started." He said nervously.
"Where is she?" Paddy asked.
"I brought her to Scott's room."
"All right."
"Come please." We left with Quinn.
We walked into Scott's examining room. He had put up sheets in between each bed.
Suzie was in the first one.
"Ah good you are here." Suzie said breathlessly. We stood beside the bed. Quinn held one hand I held the other.
I had closed my eyes listening to the two heartbeats. The baby's was very strong. Suzie's was weaker. "What are you listening too?" Suzie whispered. I opened my eyes. Quinn and Paddy's were closed.
"We are listening to the baby's heartbeat. It is very strong." She smiled. Quinn nodded.
She held her breathe as the next pain came. Paddy and Quinn went pale.
"Suzie you must breathe when the pain comes. It is not good for the baby."
"All right. I will try."
Scott came in. "I have to examine my patient."
"All right Scott."
Quinn, Paddy and I went to wait outside the room. I closed the door behind us.
"Mom is it normal for your heart to stop beating like that?" He nodded towards Suzie.
"I do not know Son. I did not have special hearing when Hennie had her children."
