"It seems Millennialists take a long time to have their babies. It took her a week to have Benjamin."
"Oh dear the poor thing." Colleen said.
We all went to do various things.
A few days later I saw Jules at Scott's door.
"Kylie do you know where Scott is?"
"He left yesterday for Montreal." I told him.
"Oh dear." He looked very worried.
"What is wrong?"
"Katey's water broke. She has started her hard pains."
"Go to her Jules. I will find Colleen and Anna then we will go to your quarters."
"Thank you Kylie." He looked very relieved. He rushed off. I knocked on Anna's door. "Hello Kylie."
"Hello Anna. How are your midwifery skills?"
"I have not used them in a while. Why?"
"Scott has left for Montreal. Katey's water has broken."
"Oh give me a minute." She left and was back seconds later in a change of clothes. "I left a note for Athos." She said smiling. "I love bringing babies into the world."
"Yes its exciting, is it not?" I stopped at Colleen's door. "I told Jules I would bring the two of you."
"Oh good idea. I am sure with the three of us we should not have any problems."
Colleen opened the door.
"Would you like to be a midwife?"
"Yes. Is it Katey's time?"
"Yes."
"One second." She left to change her clothes too. I had been doing the laundry. I was already in some old clothes. A little damp but clean.
We were at Katey's bedside a few minutes later.
"Good day Ladies."
"How is it going Katey?" Anna asked.
"Very well." She stopped to breathe through her pain. "The little one is anxious. I was expecting another two days of minor pains."
I noticed Jules sitting in a chair in the corner. He nodded to me.
"Oh? How long have you had your pains Katey?" Anna asked.
"Five days."
"Five days!"
"It is normal for my kind." She had another pain then she grunted. "Jules."
"I am here Love."
She nodded then grunted again.
"Katey, I am going to examine you to see how you are doing." Anna said gently.
"All right."
Anna looked at us. "I feel the baby's head."
We started piling blankets for the delivery. Anna had us stop with a 'Sh'. She had her eyes closed. "Katey has the baby moved lately?"
Katey smiled. "You are trying to hear the baby's heartbeat?"
"Yes."
"You will not hear it. It is not there."
"What?! Katey oh no!" We exclaimed.
"Ladies," Jules came over to us, "its normal. The baby's heartbeat is so slow you can not hear it."
"Are you sure?" Anna asked.
"Yes very sure. It was the same with Benjamin." We continued preparing the bed for the birth.
Katey grabbed the blankets and pulled herself to the end of the bed. "Now Jules."
"Help her up Ladies." Jules told us. We moved Katey to a sitting position. She threw the blankets off of her.
"All right Kylie. Colleen. Make sure Katey does not lie down. It is important." We nodded. "Anna, once the baby is born, cut the cord and pull the afterbirth out."
"All right Jules."
Katey struggled to stay in a seated position. Colleen and I kept her there.
Once the baby's head was born Katey and Jules turned the baby together. The two of them pulled the baby out with Katey's next push.
Anna cut the cord and pulled the after birth out. Katey grunted from the pain.
"Good girl Love." Jules said.
Their daughter cried as soon as she was no longer connected to her mother.
"Is that not a beautiful sound?" Katey said.
Katey placed her breast in the girl's mouth. She started suckling right away.
"They are very hungry when they are born." She said. We nodded.
While Katey fed her daughter. Katey grunted a lot. Anna went to check her when she was done.
"Katey you are completely healed."
"That is the only thing that is fast about my childbirth." She smiled. "If we healed at the same speed as the birth we would die."
"You are as fast as I am." Colleen told her.
Jules brought Katey one of her dresses. She gave Jules their daughter. We helped her with her dress.
"Ah. Thank you Ladies. It has been a pleasure having a baby with you." Katey smiled. "Jules can we tell the Ladies our daughter's name."
"Of course Ladies, I would like you to meet our daughter Victoria May Messner."
"Uh that is a beautiful name Jules." Katey cried.
Jules wrapped Victoria May in a blanket. She snuggled into him.
"She is asleep."
I glanced at the baby her hair went from black to white. I gasped.
"Her hair changed colour?" Katey said.
"Yes how did you know?" I said surprised.
"It is what happens to a Millennialist's baby if it is a boy, its born like the father then changes to the mother when it is a girl the opposite."
"Amazing." We said together.
Katey laughed. "And you thought only shifters and werewolves changed."
"It scared us when Benjamin was born. My sister Kelly, who is a midwife for Millennialists, told us it was normal. It always scares the new parents."
"Why is she not here now Katey?" Anna asked.
"Well it would have taken her too long to come here."
"That is true." Anna said.
"And for other reasons."
"Are you up to showing our daughter to our son?" Jules asked Katey.
"Yes I certainly am." She stood up slowly.
"I may heal fast but sometimes you have those strange pains." We nodded in agreement.
We walked out into their common room. Benjamin was pacing.
"Mom how are you?"
"I am fine Benjamin. Come meet your sister."
"Sister! All right Mom. Dad. "He grinned.
Jules placed Victoria May in his arms. "Well Hello little sister. I am Benjamin, your big brother." He said softly. "She is so beautiful."
He kissed his mother. "I am going to keep the boys away from you."
We laughed.
"We will see you after Katey. Jules. Benjamin. Victoria May." Anna said.
"Thank you again Ladies." Jules and Katey said.
We nodded then left.
