Valentine's Day was quickly approaching. With the day being on a Thursday, we both were finding it difficult to plan something nice to do.

"I have a TV show to tape that morning darling and you have to be at work till 4 right?" Andy asked as we were sitting at the kitchen table paying bills.

"Yeah they switched my days off to Friday-Monday now," I told Andy.

"Well we could just do something nice over the weekend," Andy asked.

"Like?" I inquired as I licked the envelope for my credit card bill shut.

"We could go up to Santa Monica or we could out to Long Beach for the weekend and do touristy stuff," Andy told me.

"I like that idea a lot love," I told him happily.

"Great I'll think of some things we can do and we shall depart promptly next Friday," Andy told me as he shut his checkbook.

I smiled at him.

"I hope the weather is decent so we can go on the beach," I told him as I stacked the envelopes together to take to the post office later.

Biscuit snuck in through her doggy door and nearly slid across the kitchen floor.

"Woah girl you ok?" I asked her as I put my stuff back down.

"Why are you whimpering?" Andy asked Biscuit.

She used her nose and kept bumping my leg towards the back door.

"What's the matter?" I asked her puzzled as I followed her.

Andy did the same.

Biscuit took me towards the horse stable.

"Oh no it must be Chestnut," I exclaimed as I ran towards the stable.

"Darling wait up," Andy remarked as he jogged to catch up to me.

My eyes went wide as I saw Chestnut lying down.

"Oh my god Chestnut!" I remarked.

"I'll go call the vet," Andy commented as he ran back towards the house.

"Chestnut, what happened?" I asked as I looked her over.

I could hear a slithering sound from behind her.

"Oh my god a snake bit you! Oh my god, I hope it's not poisonous," I remarked as I got a shovel from behind me and struck the snake and cut its head off.

Biscuit was whimpering as she went up to Chestnut. I was always told if a horse lays down for too long, that they were choosing their time to go. But she was still so young.

After a while, Andy came back to the stable.

"Dr. Ramano is on her way up here. Should be 20 minutes. What happened do you know?" Andy asked as he looked at me.

He tilted his head as he studied my grip on the shovel.

"It's a snake bite.  I don't know if that fucker over there was poisonous," I replied.

"Fucker? Oh my god darling did you," Andy remarked in shock.

"I killed that bastard with the shovel," I remarked as I kept petting Chestnut.

"That is incredible that you killed it," Andy commented as he went to approach the dead snake.

"Either I was next or Biscuit was," I told him.

"D-darling you know what kind of snake it was? A rattlesnake," Andy commented worriedly.

"No no no are you serious? Chestnut could die," I shrieked.

I loved her and she gave me a sense of calm when I would take her for a ride or just come out and sit with her in the stable.

"The bite looks to be on Chestnut's back hind leg," Andy examined as he came back around to where I was.

"W-we can't lose her we just can't," I commented as I let the tears that had built up silently fall down my face.

Andy frowned at me.

"We can't jump to conclusions, darling. The vet will help Chestnut," Andy reassured me.

I took a deep breath as Andy was now holding me from behind as we sat next to Chestnut. Biscuit kept circling Chestnut and us.

"Chestnut you gotta be ok," I whispered as she closed her eyes.

"The vet will fix her," Andy consoled me.

"I hope so it's, it's like losing another baby," I remarked quietly.

Just then, Dr. Ramano walked in.

"Oh my god, how is Chestnut doing?" the vet asked as she rushed to Chestnut's side.

"It was a snake bite," Andy commented as he and I stood up.

Dr. Ramano looked at the snake.

"Well, I'm going to be frank. That is a rattlesnake and usually, that is the fastest killer of horses if they do get bit," Dr. Ramano told us.

"We feared that," I remarked.

"We will give her some medicine and try to clear out as much of the wound as possible," Dr. Ramano told us as Chestnut whimpered at Dr. Ramano's touch.

"She'll be ok darling I promise Dr. Ramano will make sure she's ok," Andy told me as we watched helplessly as Dr. Ramano worked on Chestnut.

I was fearing the worse. By tonight, we could be losing one of our fur babies.

After 20 minutes, Dr. Ramano paused her work.

"Well the good news is her heartbeat is normal so it didn't make it that far into the bloodstream but this wound we got to keep an eye on in case of infection," Dr. Ramano explained.

I sighed in relief but I still couldn't guarantee that Chestnut would be gone before tomorrow.

"Is there anything we gotta do?"  I asked her.

"I'm going to prescribe antibiotics for her for a week. I will be back tonight to check on her," Dr. Ramano commented as she got in her bag to write out the prescription for Chestnut.

"Pick these up from my office this afternoon and when I come by tonight, I will show you guys how to give her the antibiotics," Dr. Ramano told us.

I sniffled a bit since I had been silently crying.

"Ok thank you, Dr. Ramano," I told her.

"Yes thank you, Dr. Ramano," Andy told her as we walked her to her car.

"If anything changes, don't hesitate to call me immediately and I will try and get out here fast," Dr. Ramano commented.

"Thank you see you later," I told her.

We slowly walked back to the horse stable. I frowned not knowing what was to happen with Chestnut.

"She's got to get better. She has to stand up," I mumbled out loud.

Andy gave me a side squeeze of reassurance.

"It's in god's hands now darling," Andy whispered.

I let out shaky sigh as we didn't know what was to come with our Chestnut.
