Some warnings! There are minor mentions of rape, death, and suicide, just didn't want to surprise anyone! I hope you can still enjoy the story though.

Zombies. The living undead that could infect even monsters. At least, that's what everyone had seemingly decided on calling whatever these creatures were.

The most that anyone knows is that the virus, or whatever it is, spreads through contaminated bodily fluids like saliva or blood. It also infects a monster's magic and soul, keeping the monster alive and running along. For humans, to which many would agree had it easier, would just become rotting corpses after enough time that would eventually die out. The infected monsters, on the other hand, would live as long as it could feed on something that had a soul.

Infected monsters and newly infected humans were smart too. They could use weapons, open and close doors, strategize, work in groups, and- most deadly- run. Sure, they could only run as fast as the infected person could run, but it was a surprise when people first found out about it. It was how many people got infected, having been used to the movies and games where the undead were just shambling along with bursts of speed.

The people that survived were people in quieter areas, prisoners, or the doomsday people. For a while, it was who got lucky and almost like a party of sorts, but then supplies started running low. Even people who had prepared, or had the space at least, couldn't keep up with their own demands for necessities. It didn't hurt that other survivors began to raid places that even looked like safe havens, creating more Zombies in their wake.

Lust had originally been part of a community of nice people. He had met them by chance when he was running from a horde. They had magic, so they were able to kill the horde without losing anyone. They were sweet enough to take him in, to help him become more than what he was, which was a college dropout with lots of baggage.

They helped him with his magic, teaching him valuable lessons to help him survive and not be a burden. He wasn't very close to everyone, just one person in particular. He was another skeleton monster, though he didn't have much magic, but he made up for it with sheer strength that wasn't common with their type. He went out of his way to welcome Lu into the community, to show him the ropes and teach him whatever he could teach. He really was a sweet and gentle person, someone that made the end seem almost nice.

Of course, as stated before, there were raids on occasion. Everyone in the community had a survival pack ready and on them at all times, or at least near them, in case a raiding party too big or strong came by. They had the occasional drill to make sure everyone knew where to run off to and hide, as it would be difficult to just abandon the land they had claimed. It's easier to rebuild once the raiders leave than to scatter and hope to find each other again. However, the last raid was a surprise and far more brutal than any previous ones.

The community scattered into the forest where others were waiting, catching them. Lust would've been caught had it not been for his friend. He was able to get them out, able to lead the chasing raiders away from where he had stashed his fellow survivor. Lu had waited two days in that tree, every snap of a twig making him hold his breath.

He had cautiously gone back to the community, but it was a wasteland filled with -- thankfully human-- zombies. After that, he just wondered around, scavenging for food like he was taught. He had gotten good at telling the difference between poisonous and editable food, even how to carefully cook some of the poisonous foods to be something editable.

It was probably a year after that he was caught by a band of raiders. They were planning on using him as zombie bait. He was horrified at their twisted words! He had to think of something, anything, to say to them to make them reconsider! He wouldn't have survived! He needed to survive!
