Error was the one who often took care of the mermaid. He didn't trust the others to do it. Like, why would he when they have a history of mistreating their animal subjects and stealing things?

The only people he could say he trust to leave in a room full of exposed work was Core and Fresh. Core because she honestly didn't care about his work and because she was bluntly honest. His brother though wasn't the type to steal information or such, pulling a mean prank was more his style.

Since Error spent the most time with the mer, he started talking with it. He was honestly the only one who could get near them without them screeching like a banshee. Though, they still didn't let anyone touch their tank.

He mostly told the mer random things, like what he was/had for lunch, what he did the night prior if it wasn't sinful. Though, there were rare times in his ramblings, that he'd actually talk about his family.

The mer was a good listener, rarely making a sound to say they disliked or hated his company. But they were curious... They often wondered about the land-walker that took care of them...

One day, Error leaned against the sleeping mer's tank, pulling out an old photo.

They weren't actually sleeping, they were pretending. They wanted to know what the land-walker did while they slept.

Seeing him leaning against the glass, they quietly swam up to them, peering over their shoulder.

It was a an old picture... With Error and that other skeleton scientist along with a humam woman and a third skeleton bleeding from a wound on the chest.

They looked happy... Error didn't look tense, smiling a smile the mer had never seen before... His eyes glowed with peace and trust in them... A peace and trust that was destroyed...

The dark skeleton moved to put the picture away, but a cooing hiss stopped him.

He turned his head slightly, and as he thought, it was the mer.

They were staring at the picture with curious eyes. They then looked at him, making a clicking-chirp sound. Being oddly friendly...

The doctor gave them a confused look. He didn't understand animal sounds, that was more of Doctor Cenz thing.

"Are you..." He paused, glancing down at the old picture taken when he was only ten. "Are you asking about the picture?"

The tailed skeleton gave a happy chirp-squeal.

The doctor could only assume that meant yes.

He sighed softly, leaning against the glass again, looking at the old picture.

"It was the anniversary of the day Mom abopted me and my brothers..." He paused, lightly running a thumb over the bleeding skeleton and human woman. "She took us to a water park and Aquarium... Then we went for ice cream..."

The tailed creature tilted their head some. The land-walker's voice softened... And saddened... That woman... His adoptive mother meant a lot to him...

"It was such a wonderful day... This was taken when we went to the docks... I look like such a dork." A forced chuckle left Error's lips, tears springing to his eyes. "But she called us handsome... Wonderful, and brilliant men! That we were her stars!" His voice cracked.

He took a deep breath after that.

The creature cooed softly, a worried look on their face.

"She died the day I was sent to the front lines... I wasn't even there to mourn her... For her funeral..." His breathing started to get heavy. "No... Instead I was sent to get shot at, have my back stabbed and nearly die three times... For a fucking useless war!"

The dark skeleton dropped to his knees, the photo falling lifelessly as he started babbling... Words spilling from his mouth without consent or thought...

It was of all the horrible, awful things he was forced to endure... It all was within detail... Enough to make one sick... And it did...

A blossom of anger and respect filled the tailed monster. Anger for the people who dared hurt the doctor before them. And respect for the same doctor for trying to get over it... For trying to grow and trust people again...

Yet... They could see, he needed more than that.

Error looked up at the still unnamed creature.

Everyone was calling them 01 since they were the first of their kind to be recorded... But the name felt so dull and lifeless.

"Ya know, 01 isn't a real name." He started, not really glancing up from the work sheet in his hand.

The creature made a giggling coo, agreeing with him. He's learned, over more time of talking with the creature, what certain sounds meant. Not in complete depth like Doctor Cenz, but at least enough to have a small conversation.

"Why don't you try and tell me your name? Or point to something that's similar to your name." He muttered, finally looking up.

The mer-skeleton waited for a second, thinking. They then pointed at the pen that Error was using.

This got a raised eyebrow as he lifted the object up.

The creature nodded, smiling.

"I doubt your name is Pen." The glitch chuckled looking at the pen before looking at the pouty specimen. "Ink?" He questioned.

This made the pout disappear as the creature gave a loud squealy noise, flipping in circles before pressing against the glass.

Error chuckled, smiling.

"Ink it is then."

Ink smiled at the land-walker, exposing his sharp teeth. He really liked this one... He liked them better than anyone he had meet before.

The glitch walked closer to the creature, placing a hand on the glass. There was a sad look on his face.

"I'm sorry you have to be here... But I don't have the authority to get you home..." He voice was soft, his eyes and words genuine.

Ink's smile fell a little, he pressing his hand against the glass, right where Error kept his. He trusted him and his words... This land walker would never hurt him...

A noise entered the room, causing both of them to separate and move back.

More scientist entered the room, many of whom wanted to dissect  the tailed creature.

The creature gave a growling hiss at them as they marched to Error, who was once again distracted by some paper.

"Error, we need to do something about Subject O1." A human scientist hissed.

"We need to learn all that we can from them! See how fast their metabolism is, how fast they can even swim too!" Another scientist shouted, this one being a dog monster.

Soon, every one of them was shouting about how they needed to test and experiment on Ink, how they needed to dissect them.

For the most part, the dark glitch kept an emotionless expression, but the mer-skeleton could tell the other land-walkers were starting to bug him.

"Enough." The word wasn't shouted, he didn't even raise his voice. Yet, everyone went quiet. "The creature has a name for one." He started, walking toward the tanks. "Two, they're a living, sentient being that's not some fucking toy for you lot to break." He hissed that part out. "And thirdly, as long as I'm in charge, no one is touching this creature." The land-walker glared at his collogues, sneering slightly. "Am I clear?"

The others winced and nodded. They knew better than to defy him... He was terrifying.

The glitch scoffed at them, shaking his head. He then turned to Ink, who had lowered himself close to Error.

"Don't worry, I won't let them hurt you." He sighed softly, turning away from the creature and left.

Ink placed his hands on the glass, pressing against it. His soul hated to see the other so sad and stressed...

Maybe... Maybe showing a little of what his species can do would make him happier... Yeah, that could work...
