The shots were loud, a little deafening. The world around me seemed to blur, barely able to formulate the steps to take in front of me. König walked with urgency, but i could tell he was slowing himself, his strides just under their usual length. He threw a glance at me, and i saw his eyes for a moment. He turned back, and i saw the scene behind him for the first time.
It was a man, thrown, flying across tiles until he hit a wall. He went limp afterwards. His body didn't raise, his chest didn't seem to move with a breath. Dead.
My throat went dry, and it ran up until my mouth was the same. I couldn't stop myself from staring, it was so futile, yet so easily done. A man killed, and here i was watching aimlessly.
"Kleine!"
The abrupt call snapped my attention to König, his wide eyed gaze now fixed on me. I felt confused at the unfamiliar nickname- Kleine?
"What'd you just call me?" I asked, confused. Kleine?
König gaze softened.
"Nothing, i-"
A bullet suddenly hit the floor.
"Oh, scheisse."
König was quick to move, pushing me towards the wall as he whipped around to face the attacker. I pressed my back to the wall, sliding down slightly as my fingers seemed to clutch at the paint. I watched as more bullets came our way, ricocheting off the floor. They nicked the ground, leaving rough indents off their white, shiny, surface.
König was behind a large metal stock cart, a makeshift barricade, with bullets piercing through its bags and boxes. He was too big to be fully covered by it, crouching to atleast adhere to his height. The pistol from his waist was now in his hand, waiting for a moment before he quickly reached out, letting out a few shots. It was four, then two, before he came back behind the cart, reloading in a swift motion when his eyes locked onto mine. He looked at me for a second, both hands gripping his pistol with a finger paused on the bottom of the handle. His gaze lingered, and my pounding heart was unmistakable.
König seemed to hesitate, grip loosening, but just as quick as his eyes could drop to ground, they were picked back up, no longer on me.
In a matter of seconds he was quickly moving, jumping out from his shield and advancing forward.
I was shocked, watching him through the few empty slots of the carts- a few bullet holes. He was now far infront of me, and i could just barely see the boots of what was once many men, now scattered behind him. I peeked from behind the cart, seeing now in full, and i let out a loud gasp.
He was in the lobby now, a man slumped against the wall to his left, but his focus was on the one on his right. He pulled out a large knife with one hand, jagged, and struck them with his forearm, before then running the knife directly into their skull. Dead.
When the knife was pulled out, König didn't struggle. It was something he had done before. The blood trickling out of a coin slot hole in the man's head wasn't worth a second glance. He was an afterthought.
With my hand now clutched to the cold steel bar of the cart, it was the only thing truly separating me from this brutality. I was an unwilling witness to the violence, with no choice but to sit and watch.
König, with his knife coated in blood, stormed to his next target, sinking the same knife into a new body. It slid into his throat, and you could see the blood bubbling as his hand went to feebly stop it, before ultimately falling to the floor. Dead.
He reached for his pistol, a new weapon, and fired a shot into two more men. Dead.
He sauntered over to a man, who was speaking in a foreign language with his gun raised and being used to gesture, before landing a shot into his left foot. The man fell over in pain, where which König finished him off with a bullet to the head.
Dead.
It was at this point I understood, a grim realization. There was no different within violence, there was no distinction. Dead, was infact, dead.
