"I win!" Joshie said throwing his last card down.
"psh beginners luck." I say rolling my eyes. It was early august, and Joshie and I were playing a card game called boots. "Again!" I say.
"your on" as he shuffled the cards Oma came downstairs.
"what are you doing up so late? Why it's nearly 11 PM" Oma scolded.
"I could ask the same of you, Oma." I laughed quietly.
"cigarette break," she said as she went outside. Joshie and I continued our game of cards, he put down a six, I put down an eight, then he did a jack, and so on. I won.
Oma came back in after a while and sat down at the table. "How are my Lieblinge? Joshie I haven't heard anything about your school, what are you thinking of majoring in college?" She asked.
being put on the spot Joshie blushed "uh I'm not entirely sure Oma, I was thinking about being a veterinarian" he said looking at his cards.
"why that's wonderful! What about you Lindsey?" She asked.
"I-I'm not sure Oma. I haven't thought about it." I replied anxiously.
"well make sure to get A respectable job, you have a bright future ahead of you Lindsey I can tell." She said patting my head.
I smiled and there was silence as we played. "So when does your-" Oma cut herself off by grabbing her chest and breathing heavily.
"Oma are you alright?!" Joshie asked dropping his cards and putting his hand on Oma's back.
"I'm fine joshie, my shoulders just hurt a little, I'll just get some water." As she stood up joshie tried to stop her.
"let me get it for you!" He insisted, but she still got up.
"I'm said I'm fine joshie, now as I was saying-" she reached into the covered and got a glass. "when does your school starts?"
Joshie and I looked at each other worriedly. "Uh September first for me, Oma" I replied.
oma grabbed the water carton, and poured herself a glass "how nice, what about you joshie?" Joshie almost answered, but as Oma put the carton back into the fridge, she fell. Joshie went over and held Oma's head up, as her breathing got heavier.
"go get dad!" He shouted at me. I froze, for a split second, before I ran upstairs.
"Mum! dad!" I ran into their bedroom, shook the out of bed. "Mummy! Daddy! It's Oma! Hurry!" I yelled teary-eyed. Everything was happening so fast that the next thing I knew I was in the hospital, sitting there, scared, confused.
mum sat with verity in her arms, and joshie sat with timmothy in his. dad was pacing, waiting for news on his mum. The air in the hospital was clean but stale. All that was heard was the beeping of medical devices and occasionally a patient being rushed to a different room. I felt like crying, but as I looked toward my family I couldn't. Joshie was having to put on a brave face, timmothy was scared, verity could sense something was wrong, and dad was worried sick about his mum. What gave me the right to cry if they weren't. Besides Oma was gonna be fine. Right?
josh bumped my shoulder. "It's gonna be ok" he whispered.
I smiled "I know" I'm not sure if I believed it, but I had to. Soon the doctor came and talked to my dad, and soon my mum joined the Conversation.
"Joshie. Your gonna take Lindsey, timmothy, and verity home. Ok," she said softly.
joshie nodded "ok," he said his voice laced with worry.
"mum, what's wrong with her?" I asked. "I have the right to know. So does joshie!"
"Oma... she had what's called a STEMI, the doctor said it's a very serious heart attack... there gonna Monitor her for a while, dad and I are gonna stay here..." mum said sadly "but don't you worry, Oma is strong. She'll be back in no time!"
I nodded my head as we went to the car. The drive was long and tedious "do you believe her? Mum I mean." I asked.
"mum would never intentionally lie to us." Joshie sighed.
"that's not what I asked..." I furrowed my eyebrow, joshie wasn't able to answer.
