On August 20th, 1996, there was a funeral. A funeral for Ida Boris- my Oma.

A wave of depression washed over our house, flooding every inch of it, but the most damage was done to my dad- understandably. he just lost his mum, his last parent. it was hard to believe... she was just- gone. dad tried to keep his sadness at bay in front of us, but more than once I caught him crying. Timmothy was sad as well, but I don't think he fully understood what had happened. and... Joshie, distracted himself with his job.

I held it in till the funeral, that was the only time I cried. my uncle and cousins came. along with my aunt and her stepson. and then it was over, and so was summer.

another year of Hogwarts was here, the express was full and Soph and I spent a good 8 minutes trying to find seating. "don't look now but a certain Malfoy is sitting behind us..." I calmly turned my head the slightest bit and was met with the smirks and glares of a group of most likely pureblood prejudice. among them was him, the boy who owned those silver eyes. I didn't get a good look at them before I turned back around.

"oh bloody-" I cursed, "you think they'll glare at me the entire ride?" I asked.

"Not if I have anything to do with it." Sophie stood up "oi keep your stares to your self you bloody dog craps!" she shouted.

"Sophie!" I pulled on her sleeve making her sit down.

Sophie rolled her eyes "by the way I got this." she threw a paper on the table in between us, it was a new version of the Lucius Malfoy scandal.

"put that away! what if he see's!" I grabbed it and hid it in my lap. "merlin Sophie"

"so what if he sees? It's common knowledge by now." she slumped back into her seat.

"it's rude." Sophie shrugged "what if that were your dad, I highly doubt you would enjoy people gossiping about it." I scolded as the express started, and soon I started doing my own thing reading.

I got 'Merlin Makers' out and looked at the thin book. how could so much information fit in this small thing? I opened it a skimmed threw the pages, but as each page went by a new one formed. "hm" I stopped at a page called 'The Wonders Of Wands' and started reading. what was my wand again? I believe I remember it being... Alder wood? I found the section about alder wood and read the following.

"Alder is an unyielding wood, yet I have discovered that its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate, and most likable. Whereas most wand woods seek similarity in the characters of those they will best serve, alder is unusual in that it seems to desire a nature that is, if not precisely opposite to its own, then certainly of a markedly different type. When an alder wand is happily placed, it becomes a magnificent, loyal helpmate. Of all wand types, alder is best suited to non-verbal spell work, whence comes its reputation for being suitable only for the most advanced witches and wizards." well I'm not sure if that is precisely accurate for me I found it interesting.

"non-verbal spell work. What's that?" as soon as I asked this the book flipped to a page titled 'sorcery and spells'. a paragraph seemed to glow, and so I read it

"A nonverbal spell was a spell which was performed without the casting Wizard or witch speaking the incantation aloud. Performing spells non-verbally is very difficult and requires a good deal of practice, as it requires concentration and mental discipline alone.

Different wand-woods might also affect the performance of casting non-verbal magic. Many wands made from Dogwood are rather noisy, and refused to perform non-verbal magic, whereas wands of Pine are some of the most sensitive to non-verbal magic. Willow wands possess a well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic, but of all woods, Alder is known as being the best suited for non-verbal magic." I felt my wand in my pocket. that should come in handy.

"hey, soph?" Sophie looked up raising an eyebrow. "what kind of wand do you have?"

"uh, I'm not entirely sure? pearwood I think." she shrugged.

I cleared my throat. "what are pear wood wands?" I asked the book, to which the pages flipped and a paragraph was highlighted. "This golden-toned wood produces wands of splendid magical powers, which give of their best in the hands of the warm-hearted, the generous, and the wise. Possessors of pear wands are, in my experience, usually popular and well-respected. I do not know of a single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard. Pear wands are among the most resilient, and I have often observed that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use." I read. "neato! merlin soph, this book you gave me is a wizard dictionary! why, I wonder if it has an end to its knowledge? I doubt even I could finish this book."
