Chapter Forty-One - goodbye.

I turned to look at Damien as I walked over to him and he quickly grabbed my hands, stroked it softly, the fear of going back clear in both our eyes.

I turned to face her as she looked at me, "Brand has become suspicious, one of my spies in the castle heard him speaking to the council. The longer we stay here, the less likely any of this is going to work. I have been up all-night planning, and here is my idea" she said as I nodded at her,

"Lillian, as far as Brand knows, you are still emotionless. He knows that only a kiss from your supposed mate will reverse the spell, so you must kiss him unfortunately, then he will believe that the spell is still intact." She said as Damien gripped my hand tightly, the shadows flickering within the room dangerously.

I turned to face him as I touched his cheek, "Calm down Damien, I'm sure this is the only solution. Besides, it will pain me as much as it pains you. I want nothing more than to rip his dick off, but we must play along. And that goes for all of us. We all need to go back to our old lives." I said looking around as they bowed their heads at me,

I turned to Cyrene as I bent my head allowing her to continue, "Once inside, Evelyn will be in a coma, a magically induced one. I will send her to sleep soon, but Lillian you must state you did it after she came to your camp, chatting nonsense. You had to put her asleep as she was going crazy, and it was the only solution. Hyde you say she evaded you, found them before, we know she's a better tracker than you, so it makes sense" she said as Hyde huffed at her comment causing me to laugh,

Hyde looked at me as I quickly turned away hiding my smile, "Anyways," Cyrene continued, "Hyde you found Lillian over Evelyn's body, alone. You asked her where Damien was, and you say that she didn't know. She felt she finally pissed him off enough where he had left her, she assumed he was around somewhere" she said as I listened,

"Therefore, when Damien comes back you two aren't speaking. This must continue when you return, therefore gives you a slight alibi for the tension within the room." She said as Damien huffed beside me,

"Once you and Hyde met you say you already have the package, and that will lead up until now. You will not discuss what you and Damien fought about, but it will have been intense. There will be no contact between you two until this is over, no secret meet ups, no walks, nothing. You two alone together would give this whole operation away, so while I know it is going to be hard but no matter what, you cannot be alone." She said as I bit my lip,

Cyrene turned to Hyde, "That will be your duty Hyde, as first hand to the Queen you must be with her always. Evelyn you must return to being Brands first in command too, anything you can gather is essential, it may be the key to what we are missing" she continued as Evelyn nodded,

"The main aim of this operation is information. Right now we know fuck all, and if he is planning on taking Lillian's life, we need to know why and how, and what this whole ritual means to him. There must be a reason he wants to resurrect the dragons, and some way that he knew Lillian was the key to this, and I don't think he got this all from Lillian's mother." She said as I let out a deep breath,

"Now all of you get dirty, literally. You haven't been sleeping in a bed the past few weeks, so go outside. Do some training, roll the mud. Whatever it takes, but you must stick to the script. Lillian and Damien you have ten minutes to say your goodbyes, but from then you must stay away from each other. The slightest scent on either of you will ruin everything and Brand will probably kill you on sight." She said as I turned to look at Damien, pain filling my body.

"Ten minutes?" I said turned back to her as Damien's hand gripped my thigh, "That's it?!" I said as Cyrene and everyone looked down, "Cyrene, I can't, that's not enough time" I pleaded as she gripped the table with her hands,

"Lillian please, there is nothing I can do. If you are serious about bringing Brand down, this is the only way. It begins now, you know that" she said as I held back the pain in my body,

"Very well." I said as I stood up, "We leave in fifteen minutes, get ready" I said as everyone quickly left the room, leaving me and Damien behind.

He slowly pushed the chair out as I went to turn away, the weight of the situation growing on me. Damien gently grabbed my arm as he turned me to look at him, his face softening at the tears growing in my eyes.

"Hey, it's going to be okay glowstick" he whispered as he pulled me tight into him, my body humming being so close to him, his scent engulfing me. I let the tears fall as he sat back down, lifting me onto his lap,

I lay there for a while, in silence, allowing just the closeness of our bodies to satisfy me. The silence hung in the air, neither of us daring to move in case the time was finally up. He stroked my head gently as I leant against his chest, his steady heartbeat loud against my ear.

He gently placed a kiss on my head as I looked up to him, my eyes taking in every inch of his face, one that would haunt me in the days to come. "I love you so much Damien" I whispered as he nodded pulling me in tight, "I know glowstick, I love you too" he said as he pulled me close again, inhaling my scent as if it was the last breath he would ever take.

I climbed out of his lap as I took a few steps away, our hands slowly letting go of one another. I turned to face him as I saw a single tear run down his cheek,

"We will be together soon Damien. I promise. And then, I will mate with you, and we can finally be together. Forever" I said as he smiled at me, my heart cracking in two. I turned away before I could stop myself and rushed out of the room, tears streaming down my face.

My heart was broken, and my body felt numb. But I pushed further away from him, and pushed down the pain through our bond, I needed to do this. If I didn't, we would never win this war.

And I was going to win.
