UNTIL NEXT YEAR,
(Part one)
Sirius' POV.
———
Everyone felt a little groggy. A late night followed by a morning so early, the sky was still brightening as everyone was boarding the Hogwarts express.

But, home time, at last.

"It's so dumb they do the dance right before we leave." James groaned, dragging himself into the train carriage. Exhausted from the night before.

"I'm guessing you stayed until kick out?" I said cheekily. Nudging him out of the way so I could get a window seat. All he was going to do was sleep for the next three hours anyway until lunch time. I wanted to watch the castle and mentally wave it goodbye, until next year.

James, sleepily, had a huge grin on his face. His arms were folded, as he settled himself into the carriage and already had his eyes closed to get some extra sleep. Feet up on the seat whenever Remus and Peter would join us.

"She actually likes me, I think." He said still grinning ear to ear like a Cheshire Cat.

"I'd hope so mate, Pete said he witnessed a disgustingly long snog by the end of the night."

"Ah, he's just jealous I wasn't laying one on him instead."
"But yeah, we kissed." James practically giggled.

I couldn't help but let him have his moment. It wasn't the time to tell him, or the others when they got here, that I had a disgustingly long snog by the end of the night too.

James had been waiting for this moment for years.

I had been since November.

It wasn't quite the same.

Despite that, my smile for James felt as if it were shared. I had myself in mind too. A shared victory. A great celebration to end our last Christmas term at Hogwarts.

We both have our girls.

Maybe.

It felt like it could be.

I had never told anyone, as frankly anyway, that my reputation wasn't purely down to greed or self obsession. Which many thought to be true.

Hogwarts wasn't a subtle place. Any mumble of a word eventually made its way back to you, even if you had to figure out what it meant.

I knew some people hated me for what I had done to their friends, or them. For how swept up in the chase I was, before realising those people weren't who or what I wanted. The excitement and desire of being wanted quickly crumbling.

I was obsessed with the idea of people and being loved, in the same way some were obsessed with the idea of me and my power.

I knew how that must have seemed. To be enthralled with someone on one day and walk past them like a stranger on the next.
