ONE OF HIS GIRLS,
———

The last Monday before term ends and Christmas begins and I couldn't wait to go home.

I missed Nana, Ellie and Ringo our cat. I missed muggle comforts. A heated radiator, a carpeted floor, a boxed television with endless Christmas movies. A Chinese takeaway.

I bet she was itching to see me, Nana, especially after the accident. I heard the urgency in her voice, but the restraint in knowing she couldn't come visit Hogwarts.

I had spoken to her very briefly here and there since. Every time Madam Pomfrey wanted a quick check up, she had promised Nana I'd be at the other end of the phone.

Nothing new was happening in their lives, that I knew. Same old routine that I couldn't wait to return home to.

It was healthy to have a break from the castle, and a break felt very much needed right now.

"Stop." Valeria hissed beside me. Snapping my attention away from the Christmas themed doodles I was scraping away at in my notebook. I glanced down at my mindless scribbles.

A Christmas tree.

A ribbon wrapped present.

A little elf with a little Santa's hat.

I wonder if that's where muggles knew elves from? Santas little helpers and all. Elves were a great deal of help. That was true. I suppose all legends in the muggle world had their place in the magical world. A thinly thrown veil between story and reality. Dragons, elves, magic-

"I said stop." Valeria grabbed my quill.
"The scratchings driving me insane."

"You know you really need to learn how to mind your business," I found myself replying. A joyful tone to my voice born from boredom and developed into childish self entertainment.

Her jaw pushed forward as she let out an irritated sigh, but I decided to stop. Proceeding to tap my quill repetitively against my page instead.

"What has gotten into you?" She snapped in a harsh whisper, making sure she was not caught shouting.
"Decided to finally wake up from the dead or something, zombie girl?"

I knew the names were still circulating around school. Though not as frequent, many people had moved on with their lives and were several rumours disconnected from me by now.

Valeria Greengrass and her best friend Octavia Abbott were still very much on the 'Grace Webb is a freak' train, however.

It didn't have the same ping to it anymore though, I must admit. I felt an internal shrug of my shoulders every time I heard a similar name being thrown in my direction.

"Almost," I replied.
"Though I still bite."

I mimicked quickly leaning in and biting the air in front of her. Causing her to gasp and jump back on the bench. Her squealed gasp caught the attention from most of the class.
