A COLD CARRIAGE RIDE,
———

Suddenly the queue behind and waiting for Regulus to stop interacting with the Thestrals became impatient. Many of the students dispersing into different queues or skipping ahead entirely, passing Regulus with odd stares and the occasional passive aggressive comment.

"Hurry up." Someone said. Stubbornly still waiting.

"What is he even doing?" Another person voiced.

"Maybe he can see Thestrals."

"You know that's all bollocks, the carriages are charmed. He's on drugs."

"Do you reckon?"

"He's tripping. Look at him."

I swooped in, aiming to go in front of the two that were loudly conversing. Coming up in between them, shoulder bashing them either side to me so that they had no choice but to part their double act.

"Hmm." I hummed, looking outwards with my hands now on my hips. Not glancing at the two strangers that were clearly giving me a glare.
"Definitely on something. I reckon you two should go skip ahead. He's gonna be a while, clearly. I've got this covered."

Both of them sighed and wandered off, rubbing their shoulders. Perfectly following my orders. They moved ahead, like many people had done before them.

Each carriage lined up in rows that followed the direction of the road ahead; that students queued behind to filter on through.

Long strips of us, or huddles behind a section.

There must have been about one hundred of them, each carrying about four maybe five students. Six if they were small.

The drill was, a group takes the first carriage.

Then another takes the second, being one up ahead.

And so on it goes, until you reach the carriage at the front of them all.

Charmed at the top of each carriage were lanterns. When the carriages were full they shone with a regular flame, orange in its embers. To show that the counting spell had been lifted, the correct amount of students occupied the carriage. Returning the flame to its most natural state.

When a carriage was partially full, it shone a flickering magenta. Almost like a countdown, though this never lasted long before someone filled the empty space.

Empty was a white flame. Bright and steady. Awaiting students to trigger the charm and begin its counting process.

If you were at the back, you had to walk longer. All the way to the front carriage, that often had a white glow until the last moment.

It was a system that made no sense until you were there for a while. First come first served, like many things at Hogwarts. They all set off at the same time anyway, so getting a front carriage wasn't exactly ever the goal or meant you'd skip traffic and beat anyone else to the main entrance.
