WE'RE FRIENDS, RIGHT?, Grace's POV. (A/N: Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! I hope everyone finds a reason to smile this holiday period, whether you celebrate or not. Thank you so much to everyone who's been reading and commenting this year - you've made me smile.) ———
"Merlin, what happened to you?" Ramona half heartedly asked, as I made my way into the dorm room we shared. Though dry, thanks to Sirius' spell, I still looked somewhat disheveled.
'None of your business', I thought to say but bit my tongue.
Without offering her a reply, I made my way over to my trunk and rummaged for a clean pair of pyjamas. Specifically, the fleece lined ones that kept me extra warm on extra cold nights.
It wasn't too cold out. Not really. In actuality it was quite mild for the beginning of January. Throughout the evening any frosty parts of the castle had eased and though a definite chill in the air, it wasn't quite like last year. It was raining, diluting any snow we had gotten. Whereas last year it was thick of it. At least three inches deep.
What made me cold was my trip to the lake. Even now the black lakes temperature made a home in my bones. Settled deep within me like a poisonous sting, and as my adrenaline was starting to wear off...it didn't feel all that exhilarating and good anymore.
Ramona huffed at not receiving a response and muttered something under her breath, going back to flicking through her astronomy revision book.
"You know you're going to have to talk to me at some point, right?" She spoke up, incredulously.
"Sure. When necessary." I said without feeling.
"All this over the lack of a stupid Christmas card or letter or something?!" She tutted as if I were a child.
"Uh-huh." I replied bluntly, gathering my wash stuff, realising to warm up I probably needed a hot bath - not just warmer clothes.
If she had actually paid attention, she knew it wasn't just about the lack of a Christmas card. She knew that she did not reach out to me after the party at Malfoy Manor, and she knows why she should have and exactly what she was getting me into. It wasn't the lack of Christmas well wishes, it was her (and the other girls) lack of thoughtfulness entirely.
With all that she knows, I know she's too pig-headed to ever apologise. Especially when she knows she's in the wrong. It's as if it makes it even harder for her.
"So, what? Is this it then?" She scoffed though narrowed her eyes. "You and Dorcas get boyfriends and suddenly the rest of us aren't important enough? No time for us anymore, is that it?"
I couldn't help but laugh at the mean insecurity in her tone. Not because I found it funny, but because she couldn't be this dense!
I had no clue what Dorcas was up to at the moment, other than bumping into her earlier (and not lingering). But even I knew she had disappeared, for no other reason than wanting to be with Remus.
