Chapter 28: Malfunction

"Nova, what the fuck did you just do?!" Rick pierced through Nova with his gaze, as he held the wound on his leg. "NOVA!"

Nova stared in disbelief unable to form a sentence. Unable to say anything.

"NOVA!"

"NOVA!"

"Nova!" Nova opened her eyes when she felt someone shaking her awake. She accidentally fell asleep on the couch. It was Steve.

"How are you always the one to wake me up?" She murmured.

He smiled, "Fury's here."

Fury had filled in the team about all the information he had. They had decided their next move, and figured out part of what Ultron was doing. Now the only thing left to do was to stop him.

Right before they left, after Nova got into her suit, she saw Tony fidgeting, she walked over to him. "Hey, dad. You okay? I mean, despite the obvious—"

"Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" He lied.

Nova nodded, she looked at him for a moment, he didn't say anything and avoided eye contact, "It's not your legacy to kill The Avengers, dad."

"What? How did you-"

"It doesn't matter." She brushed off his question, "Dad, you created ultron because you thought it would protect the world. A man with determination like that won't be the thing that gets us killed. He would be the one who saves us." Tony looked at her, his eyes had a spark of sadness, like he was waiting to hear this from someone, "Your legacy is ending it all, the war, the fight. Not making it worse."

"How can you be so sure?"

"Ah well, consider me a witch." Nova remarked.

Tony had headed off to the Nexus to find out who was stopping Ultron from accessing nuclear codes. Nova headed with Steve to Helen cho's lab. It was suspected that Ultron was building a body, far stronger and smarter than anything on earth.

As they ran in, they found a heavily injured Helen cho on the ground of her almost destroyed lab. They ran to her.

"He's uploading himself into the body." She informed.

"Where?" Steve asked as he covered Cho's wound.

"The real power is inside the Cradle. The gem, its power is uncontainable. You can't just blow it up. You have to get the Cradle to Stark." She said, her voice quivering. Steve looked at Nova concerned.

"First I have to find it." Steve said.

Clint and Nat spotted a truck from the lab on the bridge. Steve and Nova headed towards it. The bridge was below them, Nova simply flew to its roof, but Steve had to jump. Steve hung off the backdoor of the truck, being instantly blasted by Ultron.

Nova flew infront of the opened doors and shot an energy surge at Ultron. He attacked back, Nova dodged it, but Steve got hit with it, causing him to be removed from the truck and fall onto oncoming traffic.

He jumped up on the roof of the truck. Ultron came flying up, "You know what's in that Cradle? The power to make real change, and that terrifies you."

"I wouldn't call it a comfort!" Steve retaliated as he threw his shield at Ultron. The two began their combat.

Nova flew behind Ultron and shot him with an energy surge. He looked at her with rage, "Oh, little Stark. Tell me, how's your step-father?"

"What?" Nova asked, stunned.

"What?" Steve said.

Catching Nova off-guard, Ultron shot at her, causing her to fall back onto the ground rather aggressively. "Nova!" Steve yelled.

Nova backed up against the bridge wall, and grunted, "I'm okay." She spoke into her com. She got up, the truck had moved quite away from her.

She had to fly towards it, but as she lifted herself up, she fell back down on the bridge. "What the hell?" She whispered to herself. She was unable to fly. It was almost as if her powers were malfunctioning.
