Chapter 49: Rome falling

"We met with a goodbye kiss."

Peter and Steve combat each other, eventually, Steve hits a gangway located above Peter with his shield. It's about to fall on him, till it stays stagnant in the air, engulfed with blue aura.

Peter looks up to see Nova holding it with her powers, Nova frowns, noticing how he isn't moving, "Shoo!" she says, Peter scurries off to the side as Nova lets go of the gangway and lands in front of Steve.

"Picking on kids? Not really your style." she remarked.

"We haven't had a chance to talk." Steve said.

"We're beyond talking now!" she spat as she struck Steve with an energy wave, causing him go flying back and smashing into a truck.

"Nova you knew this was gonna happen!" he shouted.

"I'm sorry, Steve. But I'm doing this for your own good." she raised up her hand, again striking him with a wave, he put his shield in front of him, Nova used up her strength to deploy more power towards him, while he used his shield to the best of his abilities to defend himself. He was slowly being pushed back but he held his ground, stumbling back a bit.

Nova's eyes turned blue, she raised her second hand and struck him with an energy burst, it was too powerful, he fell to his back, Nova flew towards him and held him in a force lock. He struggled to move, Nova descended to the ground.

He tried to move around but couldn't. He grunted as he gave up, "Nova, if you don't let me go people are gonna get hurt." he tried to convince her. Nova tried to hold her ground.

"If I let you go people are gonna get hurt." she retaliated.

"You know I won't let that happen." he said, looking into her eyes as he sat on his knees in a force lock. "Come on, you know me, you know I'm trying to do the right thing."

"So am I!" Nova shouted. Steve didn't reply, letting her make up her mind which she clearly was doing. She was conflicted and in pain, she thought that if she could stop Steve today maybe the avengers would stay together. She turned to look at everyone, it was chaos. They were supposed to be a team but here they were, at each other's throats the first chance they got. She knew nothing was salvageable.

She frowned tightly and let out a frustrated grunt, as she held back on her powers, letting Steve go. He stood up from the ground and didn't run away, he knew he wasn't gonna see Nova again anytime soon and wanted to take a good look.

Nova's gaze averted to his arm, she noticed something different, "Your badge," she whispered.

"What?" he asked perplexed.

"Your avengers badge, it's gone." she whispered solemnly.

Steve turned his head to look at his arm and then turned back to Nova lowering his gaze, he knew he was hurting Nova with every decision he made and that made him feel ashamed.

"I have to go." he whispered. Nova nodded, refusing to look Steve in the eye. He stayed for a moment, he didn't know what he was expecting but he did.

He then took a deep breath and turned around, running towards the jet. Nova just stared at the ground. Suddenly Steve stopped in his tracks, conflicted, he turned around and looked at Nova, she felt a gaze on her and looked up, frowning out of confusion as to why Steve stopped. A lingering hope came back to her body, maybe he changed his mind.

He jogged back to Nova, and swiftly held her face, taking her into a deep kiss. Nova kissed him back, running her hands through his golden hair.

They separated from the kiss, their faces still close. "I will see you again." he determinedly assured her. She nodded, as he separated from her and ran towards the jet.

She turned around to see Peter had been standing there the whole time, her eyes widened, she didn't see him because she was too distracted. The pair stared at each other awkwardly.

She looked at him furiously, "A word of this and your swinging days are over." she threatened firmly and started to walk away.

Peter nervously nodded, "Ye-yes ma'am." he stammered and followed her.

The tiny man was big. He was big now. He was a giant. Nova looked up in awe, her mouth gaped. Cap's team was about to get away, Nova still had to stop them so her dad didn't find out she betrayed them and let Cap go.

Nova flew up to the giant and started throwing energy bursts at him, of course they didn't work, he was too big. Rhodey, Tony, Peter all tried to fight him but nothing seemed to work.

"Okay, anybody on our side hiding any shocking and fantastic abilities they'd like to disclose, I'm open to suggestion." Tony asked.

"I have something, kind of reluctant to use it." Nova added.

"Well honey, all's fair in love and war. Show me what you've got." Tony encouraged.

A concerned look took over Nova's face, she usually didn't like to get into people's heads, and technically she wasn't going to. She hesitantly flew up to behind his head, and tried to put him to sleep. But it didn't seem to work.

"It's not working, he's too big!" she screamed.

"Try!" Rhodey screamed.

"I am, It won't work!" she repeated.

"Try harder!" Tony, Rhodey and Peter said in unison.

Nova tried to summon up her strength, she screamed in agony standing behind the giant, he eventually was made aware of her and tried to slap her away. She saw his arm about to swing at him and her eyes widened, she used up all strength, his hand kept getting closer to her and she closed her eyes shut. Suddenly he stopped.

Nova peeked open her eyes, the giant collapsed hardly onto the ground, breaking apart an airplane, in the process hitting Peter with his arm, causing him to go crashing down, Nova saw this and quickly levitated him slowly down to the ground and descended herself. She sat down next to Peter, he was pretty badly hit.

"Okay, you're done." she said.

"No, no, I'm not done, I'm fine." he tried.

Nova got up and crossed her arms, looking at Peter, "Try to get up." she commanded.

Peter tried to lift himself off the ground but flopped back down, "Yeah, okay, I'm done."

"RHODES!" Nova heard Tony panicking on her coms, she swiftly looked up to see Rhodey plummeting to the ground and Sam and Tony trying to get to him.

Though her effort would not have worked, she lifted into the air as soon as she saw this, flying towards them. But halfway through, Rhodey smacked into a field. Tony, Sam and Nova descended shortly after.

Tony and Nova, sat next to Rhodey, taking off his mask. He was unconscious, and bleeding through his nose. Tears welded up in Nova's eyes, she looked to her side, seeing a guilty Sam standing there, not knowing what to say.

Tears dripped from her eyes, "Sam..." she mumbled. Her tone was a mix of hurt and betrayal. How could this have happened? Was their indifference ever worth all of this?

"I'm sorry..." Sam said, Tony blasted him off without even laying his gaze on him.
