The white light in the study was blinding, and I knew my father was waiting for me in a chair behind the desk. The wrinkles on his face grew deeper with the passage of time, but his cruel heart did not change at all!
The closer I got to the table, the more cold I felt.
When I was a child, I once accidentally broke into my father's study for fun. It's his private space for work and reading. No one can set foot inside without his permission. But that time I just forgot the rule. When he found that I had broken into his private study, his face was very cold. Just a look, I was scared to the spot.
His eyes were like those of a lion staring at a smaller animal. It was a look of condescension, disdain, and ferocity. He could easily kill all the animals in front of him if he wanted to.
Finally, my father asked Lady Mary to take me to the lecture room, which was reserved for people who had made mistakes. My father punished me by making me naked and kneel before the Madonna to confess my sins. I was too young to resist. I couldn't leave the room until he was satisfied.
I thought I had seen hell, so I had nothing to fear. But I overestimated myself. My father's face still reminds me of the time I was punished by him as a child. The fear in my heart is still there!
"I'll give you a minute to explain!" My father sat in his chair and didn't even look me in the eye.
"Gina hit me!" I said simply, glancing away.
"But she said you hit her first!" Whenever I had an argument with Gina, my father took her side. He wouldn't even listen to a word I said.
"Did you beat her because you were jealous that she was pregnant with your husband's child?" My father frowned. "Is this the first day you've known that your husband was having an affair with Gina?"
Is he blaming me? I was surprised, but when I saw his ruthless eyes, it dawned on me that he already knew.
"You knew, didn't you?" I glared at him. "Why didn't you tell me?"
My father sneered, "I'm afraid you're the only person in the world who doesn't know that your husband has betrayed you! But we don't need to talk about betrayal right now. The point is, you can't hurt Gina anymore. You must take good care of her until she gives birth to your husband's child!"
"I can't!" I clenched my fists. "I can't accept betrayal!"
"You have to accept that!" My father didn't care how I felt, he continued, "It's your fault because you never gave your husband an heir, so I sent Gina to him! You should know that you and Ron are in a business marriage. One of the most important conditions in your marriage agreement with him is that you must give birth to an heir after one year of marriage. Now you should thank Gina for doing it for you!"
Marriage agreement? He thinks having a baby is something I have to do? I didn't even know about the marriage agreement which my father had signed with Ron, and he never told me about it. I'm just a muppet at his beck and call and I don't have a mind of my own.
"Father, I have a question to ask you!" I looked into his eyes and said the question buried in my heart. "What is it that made you decide to give up on me?"
I'll never forget his signature agreeing to my death in my previous life! For a moment, while I was stuck in a cage, his name appeared in the bubble of dreams I was hoping for!
"What are you talking about?" My father squinted his wrinkled eyes at me like a sword, and when he understood my question, he said in a disdainful tone, "You live for our family. If you are of no use to us, you will be abandoned by the whole family. Abandoned by me!"
I get it. I finally get it! In the face of interest, all love and affection have become extremely cheap. My husband and my father easily sentenced me to death because I was no longer useful. I am like a glove that has been used up. How mercilessly I was thrown away.
"I'm ashamed of you!" I screamed at him like a madman. "I'm ashamed of being in this family. I'm ashamed of taking your name! I hate that you're in charge of my life, just as my mother hates you!"
"Shut up!" My father jumped up from his chair and walked over the table to give me a hard slap in the face.
I was caught off guard and fell to the ground. He pulled my hair and threw me through the French window. I heard the dull sound of my forehead against the glass.
My father grabbed my hair, and he pressed my forehead against the smooth, cold glass, and a stern, low voice said in my ear, "Open your eyes and look at the garbage and sewage under this shiny city. If you were born into a poor family, you would have a gambling father and a p.rostitute mother. They'll sell you to a nightclub for a living after your first period and then take the money and leave you to die. You will spend the rest of your life in a dark nightclub, where the manager will f.uck you in the name of discipline before you receive your first guest. Then they will inject drugs into your body, and you will have to rely on them completely. If you die, they will dump your body in an alley filled with sewage and garbage and wait for the garbage man to clean you up the next day."
He continued menacingly, "You should be glad that you have been given my name. At least you can enjoy a rich life like a real young lady! Do you need to be severely punished to be obedient?"
My father let go of his hand and a blood stain appeared on the clear glass. I looked at myself in the reflection of the glass. How wretched and weak I am!
"Get out! Now!" He said to me like a dog. "And don't ever mention your mother to me again!"
I don't know how I got out of that study. When I was walking on the path, a drop of wet water fell on my forehead, then two drops, three drops, and finally my body was all wet.
It rained, and I staggered along the dark road. The rain blurred my eyes, and suddenly behind me came the sound of a car. I walked aimlessly. I couldn't see where the destination was.
"Eva, get in the car!" Frade yelled at me as he rolled down the window.
I didn't pay any attention to him. My legs just moved mechanically and my mind went blank. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore.
"Eva, did you hear what I said?" Frade's voice changed to a growl. "Get in the car!"
The wind and rain beat against my body again and again. The further I went, the more tired I felt. Finally, my eyes turned gray and my body fell back involuntarily.
The muddy water from the ground poured into my mouth, and every drop of rain was like a sharp knife piercing into my body. When I felt cold and desperate, a pair of strong hands picked me up.
"Mama!" I murmured.
