The sound of the door opening broke the silence, and a light came in from the direction of the door. When I came back to reality from my hallucination, Daley let go of his hand and his back was back against the sofa. The light fell on his silver mask, and now he looked serious, and there was no more reflection of me in his eyes.

"Daley, I heard someone drop a bomb on your house!" A man's gruff voice came from the door, and I quickly got up and stood at the end of the sofa.

A muscled man in a tight T-shirt with gray hair and an Italian appearance appeared in the house. Rita's right behind him. The man greeted Daley politely, and Daley motioned for him to sit down with his eyes.

"Rita, why don't you make Chris a vodka," Daley said, "And get me one, too."

I stood by, not knowing whether to leave or not. That man named Chris glanced at me and then at Daley.

"Your new girl?" Chris teased Daley in a teasing tone. "This is the first time I've seen another woman in your house besides Rita. So you're not gay?"

"I don't have time for this," Daley said sternly. "I need you to deliver a message to the Karr brothers for me."

"Now they see you as enemy number one," Chris said, lighting a cigarette. "When I came here, I saw everyone in their territory with a shotgun on their back. Some roads are even blocked off. You attacked their b.rothel and they dropped a bomb on your house. It seems fair."

Rita brought two glasses of wine with ice on a plate, and as she turned around I was ready to follow in her footsteps. But Daley stopped me.

"Eva, you can stay," he said simply.

I stood still and he didn't let me sit down. Perhaps it was to show his ownership to outsiders, or to draw a line under me. My heart is in knots. Why do I have random thoughts about this man?

"Are you going to declare war on the Karr Brothers?" Chris asked. "You know I've always been neutral."

"No, I want you to tell the Karr brothers for me. I want a truce," Daley said.

"What? Did I hear that right?" Chris said with an exaggerated gape. "Are you afraid of those sons of b.itches?"

"It's none of your business!" Daley said. "Anyway, you delivered the news to the Karr brothers for me, and in order to make up for the loss of their b.rothel, I've decided to give them enough money in a week."

He gestured with his fingers and Chris understood immediately. He nodded.

"The Karr brothers have always been about money. I think they will be swayed by your proposal. Anyway, I hope this feud between you is over. There are no other lions on this island," Chris said, and finished his glass.

"And I want you to get me some weapons in a week," Daley whispered into Chris's ear, and Chris burst out laughing.

"Man, I knew you had other plans."

"Just do what I say," Daley said.

"Then I won't stay for dinner. Although Rita's pies impressed me, the things you asked for weren't easy to get, and I couldn't let the Karr brothers know. I have to hurry," Chris said as she got up to say goodbye to Daley.

After Chris left, Daley asked me to sit across from him, where Chris was sitting. He said to me in a commanding tone.

"I need you to do something for me."

"Since you've saved my life twice, I'd be happy to help you," I smiled politely at him.

"You don't ask me what I want you to do?" Daley squinted at me. "Aren't you afraid of danger?"
