106 Why Did You Betray Me?

"Why did you betray me?" I asked my first question.

"Sorry, Eva." Jenny almost cried, "Gina found out about my embezzlement and she threatened to expose me and send me to jail. So I had to agree to work with her, and she wanted me to tell Ron that you wanted to kill her. And she wants me to pin the embezzlement charge on you."

"That sounds like a good way to help Gina get rid of me and get someone to take the fall for you," I scoffed. "But you didn't think I'd live, did you?"

"Eva, I've always thought of you as my good friend, and that's the truth," Jenny begged. "Please let me go."

"The truth is that you and Gina conspired to kill me," I continued. "Second question, how much do you know about Ron's illegal operation?"

Jenny gave me a timid look, and then I saw a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. She was thinking. This is a common failing of all finance managers, who are timid but weigh the pros and cons even in times of crisis.

"I don't know much. Jeff usually gives me the statements and I do what he tells me to do," she whispers. "Even though I ask questions sometimes, Jeff uses Ron as an excuse to keep me out of it."

"Jenny, you know what?" I stood up and went to the table to pick up a fruit knife. I deliberately waved the knife in front of her. The reflection of the knife flickered before her eyes.

"I'm not the fool I used to be," I said. "I've seen Hell, and I promise you won't be the first person I killed."

"Please, don't." Jenny began to cry. "Don't kill me."

For such cowards, threats are enough to keep them in line. I put the knife on her chin and raised her head. Her face turned white with fear.

"Tell me, how much do you know about Ron's illegal operation?"

"All of it, I know."

"Do you know anything about arms smuggling?"

"No, I don't." She shook her head. "I swear."

She trembled all over, as if she were not lying. The most important collaboration between Ron and Mikeal was arms smuggling, and it was the deadliest for them.

"Tell me everything you know." I took out my phone and pressed record. "Tell me now."

Jenny looked at my phone and started talking about all the illegal operations Ron was involved in. I watched the time tick by. Although I tried to appear calm, I was extremely anxious.

Time went by quickly. Nearly 30 minutes later, Mark still didn't respond. Can he find Liv?

When Jenny finished the recording, she looked at me pleadingly. "That's all I know. Will you let me go?"

"No, it's not enough," I said. "It's just testimony. You'll also need to send me all the documents relating to the illegal operations of the company."

"But I didn't bring my computer," Jenny said softly, like a mosquito.

"You can do it on your phone," I said, slicing her face with my knife. She was more afraid.

"I remember teaching you how to connect the data on your computer to your cell phone. Did you forget?"

When I first joined the company, I had programmers install software on every core employee's phone that is linked to both internal company information and personal computers for work. In order to prevent information leakage, I also specifically asked the programmer to add an encrypted firewall.

Work anytime, anywhere. This is my idea. Now that's a wise decision.

"Stop playing games with me," I warned her.

Then she connected her cell phone to the computer in the room, and soon the printer was printing. The files came out of the printer, and Frade went to the printer to help me sort them out.

After the papers were printed, I asked Jenny to sign her name on each one. Jenny's hands trembled as she held the pen. When she finished signing, her eyes were as empty as death.

"Jenny, I'm very disappointed in you," I said to her, "You knew about Gina and Ron's affair and you chose not to tell me. Not only that, but you're working with Gina to get me killed. Before this, I have always regarded you as my good friend. I trust you. But you, you betrayed me."

"I'm sorry," Jenny cried.

"By tomorrow, this evidence will be released to the press." I held up the document she had signed in front of her, "And you will be hunted by the police for it. So, you have less than 24 hours to run. Run, Jenny."

I untied Jenny's handcuffs and she gave me an incredulous look. After confirming that I was telling the truth, she rushed out the door and opened it to escape.

"Why did you let her go?" Frade asked behind me.

"Because I want her to feel the pain and the fear of running."

I was as scared as a mouse, even sleeping in the park when I ran away. She should know how I felt.

"I'll have her followed," Frade said. "She'll never get out of the country."

"Thank you," I said, turning to him.

While I was interrogating Jenny, Frade looked at me silently. I don't think he's ever seen me like this. I saw a complicated look in his eyes. If it had been Daley, he'd have given me a look of relief if I'd just killed Jenny.

They are two different men.

"Now we have a weapon that we can use against your father, don't we?" Frade asked.

"No, it's not enough," I said. "The evidence only points to Ron's alleged illegal activities, but arms trafficking is the most lethal weapon against Mikeal and Ron."

"But we don't have time," Frade said. "I just got word from mark. He's cleared one spot, and he's on his way to another location."

"Where?" I asked.

"A factory in the suburbs," he said.

My mind tried to recall the distance between the factory and the cabin. The two locations are separated by less than 10 kilometres. What if he's hiding Liv in the factory?

Just then, Frade's phone rang. He went to the window to answer the phone, and a few minutes later he told me a new piece of news.

"My men have been near the cabin you're talking about," he said. "But they can't go near the cabin because there are bodyguards around it."

Could Mikeal have set a trap for me near the cabin? I wondered, would he really just give Liv back to me?

"What are you going to do now?" Frade asked.

"To find deadly weapons."

"Where?"

"At my ex-husband's house," I said.
