"I've decided to hold a press conference." I sat up straight, "That's why I need to keep the card. I recently saw a media report online about my imprisonment. I wanted to take this opportunity to teach Mickle a lesson."
"How?" Frade asked.
"I want to spread my personal experience online through the media," I told him. "I think the media will definitely be interested in my experience. Maybe they'll even help me publish a book."
"You think that's gonna scare Mickle?"
"I'm going to tell the press about my relationship with Mickle," I said. "As soon as the secret is undiscovered, he won't be able to hurt me in private. After all, his actions are under watch."
"Eva, are you sure you want to do this?" Frade looks at me worriedly. "Don't you want to get out of here for a while?"
"We're not going anywhere," I said, "Danger is everywhere. When all the conspiracies are exposed to the light of day, the true faces of the villains will be revealed. Frade, this time we're up against something. Running away is not the best way to solve the problem."
"I think you'd better talk to Tommy before you go to the press," Frade said. "I think he should be able to help and advise you on the law."
I looked down and thought for a moment. "Call Liv and Mark, too. I think they have a right to know my plans."
I know that now I am like a person walking on the tightrope. A little carelessness will lead to the danger of falling. It's not just about me, and it's about my friends.
I feel extremely guilty at the thought that Liv was kidnapped by Mikeal and almost died because of me.
This time, I must not let my good friend be in danger because of me.
Soon, Frade called Tommy, Mark and Liv to meet me at the hospital. Tommy was the first to arrive. The first thing he did when he saw me in bed was to take care of my health. After hearing about my decision, Tommy thought long and hard.
"Do you know who you're dealing with this time?" Tommy said gravely.
"I do." I looked at Tommy. "But I have to."
"Mickle isn't just a presidential candidate. He's the next president," Tommy said in a low voice. "You're up against the President."
"I had to." So what if he was God? I couldn't escape it.
"Besides, are you sure that he's your biological father?" Tommy said in a lawyer's tone. "You haven't done the paternity test yet. You can't directly reveal to the media that you and he are father and daughter."
"I'm sure the media will give a proper description of the incident, and they may use ambiguous terms," I said, "But both Mikeal and my mother have admitted that Mickle is my biological father. I don't think that's a lie. Why would he be in such a hurry to get rid of me?"
"You want to use the power of the press to protect you?" Tommy finally understood. "So Mickle can't get to you?"
"If you do decide to do that," Tommy sighed, "I'll be there for you as always. Leave the legal stuff to me."
"So did we," Liv and Mark said as they pushed the door open. She walked over to me and hugged me.
"Eva, I won't let you fight alone." Liv kissed my forehead. "Don't let me go!"
In fact, I planned to get Mark and Liv out of this dangerous place first. But Liv was adamant that she would stay with me no matter how dangerous it was.
"You know, I have to be there for her," Mark shrugged. "So I'm not going anywhere."
"We're all here for you," said the silent Frade. "We need a plan."
"Mark and I are running background checks on Mickle," Liv volunteered. "We're going to get to the bottom of this."
"I'm in charge of legal issues," Tommy said. "When you talk to the press, I have to be there. If you don't want to deal with a problem, you can leave it to me."
"I'm responsible for your safety." Frade looked at me deeply. "Let me protect you and the baby."
"Oh, Eva, are you pregnant?" Liv looked at my belly with delight. "I must be the godmother of this child!"
"Then I'll be godfather to it," said Tommy, laughing. "I'll teach him how to hit the ball with his left hand."
"Then I'll be his uncle Mark," quipped Mark. "I'll teach him how to shoot."
"So, who's the father?" Liv asked.
"No doubt," said Frade, kissing the back of my hand. "This child will inherit my name and everything I have."
I was touched by how many people loved the unborn child. I swore I would protect it.
"I think we should leave," Liv said, glancing at Frade. "You should have the rest of the day."
After everyone had left, Frade sat sideways on the edge of the bed, holding me in his arms as I listened to his familiar heartbeat. This is our family time.
"Do you think I made the right decision?" I snuggled into his arms.
"Whatever you decide, I'll be there for you." Frade caressed my cheek. "You know I'll never leave you."
The trouble God brought me never stopped, and I had to face the challenge again and again. I wish I could get over it. I wish I could get away from here and enjoy the autumn scenery in the Alps.
And when I am truly free, it will be so.
I fell asleep in Frade's arms. In my dream, I saw a white butterfly with wings flying in the valley. She flew higher and higher and finally disappeared into the endless sky.
"Mom, did I do it right?" I shouted to the sky.
My mother's face appeared in the white clouds, and she smiled at me. I looked at her, and tears rolled down my eyes.
"Do what you have to do," she said.
When I woke up, tears had soaked my pillow. There was a light at the end of the tunnel. A new day had dawned, and I was about to face a new challenge.
