"What are you looking for?" Daley looked at me calmly. He had just finished his shower and a white towel was wrapped around his lower body. A drop of water ran down his hair to the forehead.
"Nothing, I'm just looking for pliers," I lied.
"Pliers? What do you need pliers for?" He gave me a suspicious look.
"Because I want to open the diary," I said hastily. "My mother's diary is locked. I need tools to open it."
"There's nothing on the desk that you want," Daley said. "If you don't mind, I can see what kind of lock it is. Maybe you don't need pliers to open it."
So I went into the bedroom to get my mother's diary and gave it to Daley. He looked at the little lock in the diary and found a pen and stuck it in the middle of the lock. He twirled the pen a few times before the lock fell to the floor.
"See, that's easy." Daley handed me the diary.
As I opened this diary, I was secretly glad he didn't notice that I was checking his phone. When I opened it, however, the pages were hollowed out and a small tape lay in the centre. Besides, there isn't even a word in the diary.
"It's an old-fashioned tape," Daley said, staring at the tape. "You need a special player to play it."
"Where can I find this kind of player?" I was under the impression that only the old-fashioned stereo shops sold this kind of tape, but it's hard to find it on the street now, let alone a player.
"Do you need my help to find it?" He asked.
"No, I'll walk down the street tomorrow and maybe I'll find it." I put the tape on my nightstand and turned to the bathroom to take a shower.
At night, Daley hugged me to sleep. But I couldn't fall asleep. I can't stop thinking about Mia's text to Daley. What are they planning? Looks like Mia came back for something else this time.
For Frade?
Oh, no.
I felt a chill in my back, and the sound of Daley breathing in my ears disturbed me. It was as if a beast were lurking in the dark, waiting for its prey to pass by, opening its sharp-toothed mouth and devouring it.
But who's the prey?
The next day, Tommy called me, and he mentioned the family will again. He told me that he would be in Manhattan today with a lawyer and a forensic examiner who would take Mia's hair and compare it to my grandmother's. Tommy hopes that I can find time to ask Mia out to meet him.
So I thought about it for a while and agreed to his request. I haven't figured out what Mia's plans are with Daley yet, but I promised her I'd restore her identity, and I have to do it.
When I hung up, I called Mia directly. On the other end of the phone, she was immediately excited and said thanks to me. So I set up a meeting with Tommy at the hotel. Tommy's face lit up with surprise when he saw Mia.
"I can't believe I have another cousin," Tommy said, his eyes widening.
"Oh, I never thought I'd have so many family members, either." Mia offers Tommy a hug as if he were her long-lost brother. Then, Mia showed her kindness to Tommy.
After the examiner took samples of Mia's hair, the lawyer informed us about the will. As long as Mia's blood test results show that she is related to my grandmother, the family legacy will be distributed in three proportions.
During the lawyer's explanation, Mia kept listening. Her eyes gleamed with shrewdness, especially when she learned that our family owned the rights to a mine in Australia. After the lawyer left, Tommy said he wanted to have dinner with us.
She and Tommy have barely known each other for a day, but at the dinner table, she's having a great time chatting with Tommy, as if she can get involved in anything. When Tommy asked her about her childhood, her eyes darkened. She told Tommy how her foster mother abused her when she was little. And how she went on to become a dancer in a nightclub for a living.
Mia's eyes welled up with tears as she told her story. Tommy took her in his arms and comforted her.
"It's all right. Everything is over," Tommy whispered. "You're a Wilson from now on. I won't let anyone hurt you."
"You're so sweet," Mia said, wiping her tears with a tissue. She held my hand and said, "You too, my sister."
"Since we are family, I want us to be loyal to each other. I don't want to hear my family lie to me."
"I think I need to go to the restroom." Mia sniffed. "I must look really ugly right now."
"If anyone says you're ugly, I'll break their teeth," Tommy said, clenching his fists.
"I'll go with you," I said, getting up. "Put your fist away, Tommy, and don't forget you're a lawyer."
I accompanied Mia to the restroom. She opened her makeup bag and took out her powder and eyeliner to perfect her makeup in the mirror. She put on her makeup so skillfully that she finished it in less than 10 minutes. Mia was satisfied looking in the mirror. She unconsciously revealed a smile.
"Mia, do you know what family is?" I asked, looking at her in the mirror.
"I haven't felt the warmth of a family since I was a child, and I really can't answer that question," Mia said to the mirror. "Why don't you just tell me the answer?"
"Trust each other, don't betray," I said. "Can you do that?"
"Of course, I can do it," Mia said, staring at me in the mirror. "Do you think I'm lying about everything I say to you?"
"You told me you came back from Mexico because you're still in love with Frade. Is that it?" I asked.
"Yes." Mia turned. "Don't you believe it?"
"No other purpose?"
"No." Mia looked at me unhappily. "Are you reluctant to give me Frade? You already have Daley. Why are you fighting me for Frade?"
I looked into her eyes and tried to read her mind, and she went from displeasure to irritation. After two seconds, she left without me.
I feel sad that she still won't be honest with me.
Back at the table, Tommy offered to go to the bar for a drink tonight. I said no, but Mia said yes. As I watched them leave the hotel, Tommy took a seat next to Mia, chatting and laughing as the car started.
Curiosity drove me to follow them. So I took a cab and followed Tommy's car to a bar. I took a corner spot in the bar and watched them.
Tommy and Mia are sitting at the bar, chatting and drinking. After a while, the two of them went to the dance floor to dance. At first, they kept their distance, but as the music came to a climax, she moved closer to Tommy. He put his arm around her, and as they kissed, I checked the time.
From entering the bar to kissing, it took less than an hour. Well, she hooked him with her skilful technique.
But I'm not worried about them having s.ex tonight, because their kiss will be over soon. Mia also looked at Tommy with shyness and embarrassment. She turned and he caught up with her.
I had no intention of watching them any more, so I left the bar quietly. The moment I stepped out of the bar, I took out my cell phone and dialled a number.
"Hey, I thought you weren't going to call me anymore."
"I can't forget what you said to make me cry," I said.
"You're afraid and want to surrender?" His voice was seductive.
"I want to negotiate with you. Now."
"You know where to find me," he said.
