Once again, I fell into a death-like state. My body was as heavy as soaked cotton. In the darkness, a force was pulling me down. My mind wandered between the unreal and the real, and I was sure I could hear voices in my ears, and I could even see a tall figure moving in front of me.
But when I opened my eyes to see the world, I realized that what had just happened was an illusion. But Frade was standing right in front of me, just like what I had seen in my dream.
I went back to the hotel where we were alone for the first time.
"You're awake!" His voice whispered in my ear, a hand covering my forehead. "You had a fever!"
I turned my head away and looked at him carefully. His green eyes were clear for the moment, and his chin was surrounded by green stubble. I want to say something to thank him for taking care of me when I was sick. But I'd rather ask him another question.
"Do men like to tame everything, especially women?" I stared at him, wondering if he thought I was a woman he'd never seen before. He approaches me, fawns on me, and then somehow manages to make me his own?
Frade had no words. His eyes told me he was thinking about how to answer my questions. Perhaps he needed to embellish his answers so they didn't sound disgusting to me.
"It is man's nature to be competitive!" His answer was ambiguous.
"I heard you calling for your mother while you were in a coma!" He subtly changed the subject. "I bet you miss her."
Mom! Is that my call? No, what I hear when I am not conscious is a call from the abyss of darkness. A little voice called me. She called me mom.
It was my dead child, the child who had never lived in this world!
I saw a white butterfly holding her little body flying in the dark. She looked so peaceful and lovely when she was sleeping.
"Yes, that's my mother!" I said to myself, and suddenly I understood why my mother had chosen to kill herself. She must be so depressed!
We're all puppets living under my father's thumb!
"Eva, whatever happens to you, I just want you to know that I will face it with you," he said, as if speaking to another woman. I laughed to myself. He must have thought I was Mia again. At this time, I even envied her. I wish I were her.
But I'm not. I'm a woman who died and came back to life! The only reason I'm alive is to let the people who hurt me get what they deserve!
"What time is it?" I suddenly remember my father warning me that he wanted me to take good care of Gina's baby, or else he would punish me!
"I think I should go to the hospital!" I sat up straight. "Can you help me find out which hospital my sister is in now?"
"Santa María Private Hospital!" Frade was baffled by my question, "But I think you should get some rest first!"
"I'm fine!" I said. "I can go to the hospital by myself!"
"Are you sure?" He asked me again. "I don't know why you went to the hospital, but I don't want you to get hurt again!"
"I promise you I won't!" Because this time it won't be me!
Frade looked at me quizzically, but this time he didn't use a forced tone towards me. Maybe he knew that warning words wouldn't work.
"Also, I did some research on the woman we met at the Japanese restaurant that day!" Frade said. "She was representing your husband's company and was talking to an investment banker about a loan! I think your husband put her up to it!"
A loan? I was thinking about what Jenny said to me about Ron's company facing a cash crunch. It turns out Ron wanted to take out a secret loan and use the money to buy the gas company and win the merger case.
This is a great opportunity for me!
"Frade, do you have a bank you trust?" I asked tentatively. "Preferably a European bank that Ron can't get to the bottom of!"
"Of course I do!" Frade arched an eyebrow. "I have two foreign-invested banks of my own, dedicated to the grey path, you know!"
"Good, then I hope you will send me the information about those two banks later!"
"You want your husband's company to take out a loan from me?" Frade instantly understood. "You're smarter than I thought!"
"Thank you!" I wanted to hug him, but I gave up. It's in everyone's best interest to keep a proper distance.
Then Frade took me to Santa Maria Hospital. I asked the nurse at the front desk for Gina's room number. The Nurse with the silver earrings expressed her admiration for Gina when she learned that I was Gina's family. She told me that Gina had found a good husband. The man accompanied her in the hospital every day, and sometimes even went out to buy fresh flowers. She also told me that she had just seen Gina's husband leave.
I think the nurse meant Ron! Looks like he cares about Gina and the baby she's carrying. But he didn't care about me and my baby!
Anyway, his temporary departure is an opportunity for me! A one-on-one with Gina!
When I got out of the elevator and went down the corridor, I saw two burly men in suits and Bluetooth earphones standing outside the door of one ward.
Who were they protecting Gina from? Me? I laughed.
Then I saw a doctor coming out of the operating room on the left. As he left, I could see the door was half-closed, but the light in the operating room was off.
I slipped into the operating room unnoticed. The dimly lit room was filled with disinfectant, and I found a small scalpel and hid it in my sleeve.
My little sister, I'm here to take care of you!
