"Are you nervous Dario?"

"Why would I be?"

"This is our first public appearance in quite some time. We've practically been in hibernation for almost a year now. Things have been quiet-
"That does not mean that we're in the clear just yet. Abaté too, has been MIA, most likely in protective custody. We should have dealt with the bastard when we had the chance."
"An opportunity will present itself surely. He can't stay inside forever." She spoke confidently.
Tonight we are attending a ball hosted by one of the government officials. It's a charity event or so they want the public to think. In reality they'll probably be pocketing majority of the money, the sneaky bastards. Kiara has been spending most of the time being a mother to our children over the past months. Business has been on a go slow, as per my request at least in Italy. Russia has been thriving thankfully and it doesn't seem like the investigative team is aware of our Russian alliance. I'd like to keep it that way.
"Are you sure Camilla is okay with missing the ball? I could always call the nanny."
"The boys don't need a nanny Kiara. Camilla is missing the ball because she chose to not because I asked her to watch our sons. Furthermore, they're surrounded by our men and Matteo is old enough to look over his brothers." With everything going on we amplified security at home.
"That's a lot of responsibility for Matteo."
"He'll have to start getting use to it at some point. Besides, Leonardo will remain here in our absence so there is an adult around."
"You do remember that he isn't even a teenager yet right? You're putting a lot of pressure on him lately Dario."
"Because I have to, so he can be prepared."
"Prepared for what exactly?"
"Any and everything. You'll never know what the future holds Kiara. I am human, one day my heart will stop beating."
"Wow I don't know what's more shocking you being human or having a heart." She spoke sarcastically earning a smirk from me.
"In the event that I am gone Matteo needs to be able to look after his mother and brothers."
"That won't happen anytime soon though, right?"
"Kiara-
"RIGHT DARIO?" The assurance she was looking for, for once I wasn't sure if I could give it to her. I simply nodded and began fixing my tie. She eyed me skeptically but remained silent.
Once fully dressed, we headed downstairs to meet Luca and Danté.
"Matteo, time for bed." I said seeing him playing on his iPad. He knew better than to rebuttal. Kiara kissed his head before he went upstairs to his room and we left.
"In the midst of everything going on, it's good to step out for a good time even if it is a charitable event." Kiara spoke as we arrived.
"I know you've been tired of staying indoors."
"I'm tired of a lot of things Romano but most of all, I'm tired of fucking funerals."
"My mother's memorial will be the last we attend. After tomorrow there won't be any other."
"You can't even take Abaté out yet but you're trying to assure me like you're God himself."
"Kiara-
"Dario, our sons are burying their grandmother tomorrow. The woman who helped raised them. Sure, it's due to illness but the point is that they have seen more than enough death than boys their age should."
"Kiara, I am burying my mother tomorrow is there no sympathy left for your husband?" I asked.
"Did you have any for me when you told me my mother died?"
"We're back to that?"
"I'm just saying. It's always easy to feel sorry for the children." She said as she got out of the car.
My mother took her last breath last week. We predicted it would happen soon so we were somewhat prepared. Attending this event for a few hours with plans to leave early and then attend a memorial tomorrow morning. Camilla took mother's death the hardest but she is a strong woman so I'm not particularly worried. Our mother lived a long life given the lifestyle. She was a strong and influential woman. She didn't die of a bullet or beating, she survived the dark life only for cancer to take her away. I suppose it might be a good thing that she died of somewhat natural causes.
